Tons of untreated sewage has been dumped into the sea after a "technical issue".

Bathers are being warned to avoid East Worthing beach after the effluent began being discharged at about 3am this morning.

The discharge was the result of a technical issue at Southern Water Services' water treatment works in Western Road, Lancing.

The Environment Agency were notified this morning and have been onsite trying to minimise the impact.

A spokeswoman confirmed as of 3pm today sewage was still going out of the treatment works but the amount was reducing.

Members of the public can report pollution incidents by calling the Environment Agency’s emergency hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

This will make a slight improvement in the quality of sea water at East Worthing then.

Seriously, though, what a disgrace. They owe it to customers to elaborate and describe exactly what happened. They can't sweep it under the carpet / pump it into the sea simply as "a technical error".

And to think I pay I think it is 290 odd quid a year to have my sewage taken care of I don't expect it to be dumped in the sea raw. Pathetic Southern Water. If It was that easy I'd build my own waste pipe to a near by river!!

huh no surprise here !! Southern water has lost £120 worth of my payments !! even after I sent copies of my receipts which they acknowledged receiving ! They lost them now where as I should be £90 ahead of my bill they are saying again that I am £30 in arrears!! they could not run a "P" up in a brewery!!!

Forgot to say they ripped me off at my previous address but could only go back 5 years according to them!! hence I lost over £1k take their licence off of them and take it back to the way it was prior to Thatcher!!!! pay rates with water included would be even better !!
