New Green Party leader elected
11:09am Monday 3rd September 2012 in News
Natalie Bennett was elected the new leader of the Green Party in England and Wales in a ballot of party members today.
Ms Bennett replaces Caroline Lucas, who is stepping down to concentrate more on being MP for Brighton Pavilion , amongst other reasons.
She promised to fight the coalition Government's "economically illiterate cuts".
The 46-year-old Australian-born former journalist was declared the victor of a ballot of party members - beating off the challenge of closest rival Peter Cranie in the final round of a contest fought under the STV system of proportional representation.
This means that Hove councillor Alex Phillips, who represents Goldsmid ward, will have failed in her bid to become deputy leader as the party's rules prevent two people of the same gender from taking both the leader and deputy leader positions.
Ms Bennett will head straight into the party's autumn conference, taking place in Bristol from Friday, where she will deliver the keynote speech.
She told a press conference that Green Party policies were "the only viable way forward for British people, for the world".
The party will announce the result of a vote for a new deputy leader later after delays to the vote counting forced a postponement.
Ms Bennett said: "I stood because I believe in the radical vision that the Green Party has for the future of Britain. It offers, I think, the only viable way forward for British people, for the world.
"We need to not have the economically-illiterate cuts we are seeing now; what we need to have is investment in the future. Investment in homes, investment in jobs, investment in energy conservation and renewable energy and public transport.
"There are so many things we need to be investing in now and creating jobs, not throwing people into unemployment."
The Party would introduce a living wage and sufficient benefits to ensure "the chance of a good life for everyone in Britain", she said.
And the economy needed to be "relocalised", returning manufacturing to the UK and supporting farmers in providing food, and the City reined in to stop it "running riot" towards another economic crash.
Ms Bennett confirmed that the party would pursue the votes of disillusioned Liberal Democrat voters "desperately looking for a home", but insisted that it was also intent on winning over many Labour supporters and "even some Tories".
"We can appeal to a broad spectrum. We have a message for a different kind of British future that can appeal to a broad range of people.
"People have gone back to voting Labour but there is not much enthusiasm for it."
Ballots closed on Friday, with party members choosing between Ms Bennett, Mr Cranie, Pippa Bartolotti and Romayne Phoenix.
After the two outsiders were eliminated, the final round saw Ms Bennett triumph by 1,757 votes to 1,204.
The deputy leader contenders are Will Duckworth and Richard Mallender.
The leadership race followed the party finishing third in the high-profile London Mayor race with Jenny Jones.
The Greens also have two MEPs, two London assembly members, and 135 councillors across England. They run Brighton and Hove City Council as a minority and are the main opposition on Norwich City Council.
After announcing her decision to stand aside in May, Ms Lucas said she would continue as MP for Brighton Pavilion "putting the Green case for change in Parliament".

There is in the party political system now a kind of manic, desperate circus-like air of competing attractions at the Fair. And when you choose to enter the tent of any one of them, you discover entrances to all the others around its walls.
There was only ever one tent! Politicians all sound like hawkers in a market when they give us their spiel.
This lady has never been an elected representative on a council, as MP, or as MEP. But she has been voted in to oversee and lead Green party performances in each of those 3 arenas.
No experience of being a local authority employee, a government civil servant, no time in the Brussels game either....
Wondering what she brings to the job that is directly relevant.

Her first comments include a wish to see support for farmers which would be a nod in the direction of that old degree lying in a drawer somewhere.
We are facing serious food shortages globally this winter on the back of North American crops being crisped by constant extreme heat and drought this summer and our own being drowned by the constant extreme downpours over too long a period.
As a trained agricultural scientist she will have views on this. Where does she stand on feeding animals 14lbs of grain protein to gain 1 lb of edible flesh, for instance? As a scientist one wonders about her stance on animal welfare and on pesticides and fertilisers and organic farming.
I trust her fellow journalists will be enlightening us on these issues over the next day or two.

Congratulations to Ms Bennett, Caroline Lucas is a hard act to follow but I'm sure Natalie Bennett will be a fine leader of The Green Party. Look around you - what do you see ? All three main parties talking the same failed talk on the economy, and where has that got us ? It's finished (as any fule kno) and we have to act now on the alternative. The era of growth is over - and thank god - growth only leads to more pollution, ice caps melting, more STUFF for us all to buy, for what ? There's a new word in town : sustainability. It is the only way forward, for Britian and yes for the world. Beware of Lib Dems and Tories building on the Green Belt !!

The only sensible Australian politician is Julia Gillard, their current Prime Minister. Check out her views on immigrants taking over their culture.

Education is all very good, but real ENGLISH breeding sort out the class from the plebs.
Alex, Caroline and Pippa have got more ''Hine'' between them than a convicts descendant could ever even DREAM about.
Shame, but the Greens are going down the ''Swanny'', all the way to Australia. Caroline~~ You are the ONLY saviour!!!!
