Brighton Pavilion to be shown off in a different light

Brighton's best known landmark will soon be seen in a different light.

Multinational lighting company Phillips is installing exterior lighting to the Royal Pavilion .

The new scheme will illuminate the building’s Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture and pick out individual details.

When it is complete, VisitBrighton, the tourism arm of Brighton and Hove City Council , hopes to use it to bathe the 19th century structure in the modern logos of corporate clients who can hire the Pavilion for private events.

Only half of the old external lighting is currently working and it is beyond repair. The security lighting is currently being used to illuminate the Moorish-influenced architecture on the world-famous building.

Claire Ottewell, chairman of the Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance, welcomed the development.

She said: “This will shine a light on our city and must be welcomed. Not only will this make the jewels in our tourist offer more attractive it will help to improve security.

“Anything which helps to make our visitors feel safer and which boosts the tourism sector at this difficult time is a good thing.”

But details are dim on the timings and cost of the scheme.

A spokesman for the council said that the switch-on date has not yet been decided and said that he could not reveal how much the project would cost.

The Argus has submitted a Freedom of Information request for these details and will publish the answer when it is received.

The spokesman said: “It will be much more energy- efficient than any previous set-up. We will literally be showing off this icon of the city in the best possible light.

“We want to plan a launch when it can be unveiled for the best interests of the city, tourism and business and that’s not been finalised yet.

“But it will be within a few months – something to brighten the city as the nights draw in.”

great, lets hope it can be lit in different colours at different times of year, green for halloween, red at christmas etc. the city tourist attractions need upgrading, it is a shame that the brighton centre when renovated did not have any exterior lighting, although who would want to light this monster, fancy taking out old fashioned brown smoked glass renovating the building then adding new old fashioned brown smoked glass, this was an opportunity again missed to add coloured glass great lighting and possibly render the building paint it white and it would have looked great and contemporary. we all know the council have no sense of style.

Why was the existing lighting allowed to get into the state that half of it didn't work in the first place?

My council tax seems to have been enough to pay for all the silly, stupid, pc schemes that all our idiotic politicians could think to waste cash on as well as lending money to the ring on a stick thinghy.

Just like the King Alfred Centre more of the infrastructure has been ignored by those whose role it is to protect it for the locals

Projecting logos onto it? Are they serious?

Disgraceful.

I do, however, welcome subtle and beautiful lighting. Provided it's not flashing colours.

I seem to remember back in the early 70's the Pavilion being bathed in constantly changing colours at night. It was very peaceful for all the stoned hippies laying on the grass.

Seems pointless if the council arent going to maintain it. what ever happened to the colour changing benches on new road? must of failed after a year and they still haven't been fixed...looked beautiful at night while they worked. will they ever be fixed or just left until they are beyond repair also.

At least when it's lit at night people won't notice the fact that the onion domes are painted beige.

This is a listed building. The end of the pier was "stored" several years ago with the prom ise it would be restored.

This structure bears no resemblance to its former glory as the original parts were "lost" by the company who were allowed to buy it.

It is an absolute travesty that it is now going to be used to advertise far too many corporate logos.

I am personally ecstatic that I decided to leave B & H before the rot started to set in but am proud to have been born there.

Council get a grip

When you said the ring on a stick did you mean the Jason Kitcat memorial vanity erection?

On the same day squatting made illegal too!! The nerve of this council!!

Should let the squatters have it - would be far more tasteful!! Oh, I forgot, we can change the laws on them cos theyre not producing money, so they dont count as "real" people...
