Provisional date set for Pride next year

Pride and council bosses have announced a provisional date of August 3 for 2013’s event following the success of Saturday.

Early estimates suggest that ticket sales were up on last year with more than 100,000 thought to have taken to the streets for the parade and 30,000-plus inside Preston Park.

Despite the event’s future being in doubt just weeks ago, Saturday’s popular and largely trouble-free day has convinced organisers to start working on next year’s Pride.

They are also looking to move the event back to its usual early August date, having been pushed back because of the Olympics .

Officials said the date is provisional, subject to a review of this year’s event and landlord consent.

Pride director Trevor Edwards said: “I would like to thank everybody who worked so hard to make this happen.

“Pride is such an important date in the calendar for the city and we are now looking forward to next year.

“We only had 24 weeks to get Pride 2012 together. With almost a whole year for 2013’s, expect it to be even better.”

Following last year’s much criticised clean-up, Pride contracted workers to set about tidying the site as soon as the music finished at 8pm on Saturday.

The council also had an extra 50 members working |to clean up areas around the city. In total the City Clean team recorded a total of 42 tonnes of rubbish.

Following the parade they collected 8.42 tonnes alone with a further 10.6 tonnes from the Gay Village Party in Kemp Town.

Just over 14 tonnes was picked up across the city on Sunday morning. And then a further 8.7 tonnes from the St James’s Street party on Sunday evening.

Leader of the council Jason Kitcat praised organisers for delivering a “happy” and “safe” day.

He said: “The city continues to celebrate its unique equality and diversity through Pride and this puts Brighton and Hove firmly on the national and global LGBT map. This is a city where people feel free to be who they truly want to be.

“Congratulations to all residents, the organisers, contractors, the volunteers and the many Brighton and Hove City Council officials who worked tirelessly over many months to deliver this event.”

First of all well done to City Clean who did a fantastic job.

Secondly I'm hearing a lot of "this year did better than last year". Well you would hope so considering last year made hefty losses. What I'm not hearing is "we expect Pride this year to break even" or "we expect Pride this year to have made a profit".

If, as I suspect, Pride made a loss (yet again, year after year) is it really good enough to say "oh but it was better than last year".... does that really matter?

So come on then..... when do we find out the figures?

Keep the September date as it was more popular

I spent £12.50 on a ticket, queued to get in and then found that there was a 2 hour queue to get into either of the main two tents where the music and acts were on. Huge queues for the toilets too. Seems a bit of an expensive ticket to get into what is basically a big fairground. Not going again unless they sort out bigger capacity tents.

Pride is an absolute nightmare for local residents

Brighton isn't big enough to accommodate such a large number of people in such a small space

This kind of event seems to attract the worst types of people who behave in a disgusting manner

Get rid of Pride once & for all I say - who agrees?

A rubish parade, a rubish part event.

Not one gay bar or club from Brighton has a float, they are too busy counting their takings.

I will not be paying for the park again.

I am a local resident who has to put up with Pride goers urinating in our grounds, throwing broken bottles & rubbish into our gardens, making drunken noises outside our home most of the night etc etc etc

That would be ok with you if it happened at your home?

If the success of an event is based solely on people getting drunk out of their heads, taking drugs and almost certainly indulging in unsafe sexual practises, then Pride will win hands down! I wonder if they make a loss....again, the council will bail them out! After all they do have votes to think about!

I don't mind Pride being degenarate, a sort part of long history going back to greek orgies. However I strongly disagree with it being in a public park, and no way should children be there. It shouldn't be near homes. Maybe behind the racecourse or wild park. Like Lewes fireworks, outsiders should be discouraged from attending
