Hove bike crash victim named as Brighton street cleaner
A council worker killed in a motorbike crash last week has been officially named by police.
Jacek Sawa, 34, died on Tuesday in a crash in Hove . The Kawasaki motorcycle he was riding eastbound along Davigdor Road collided with a Nissan Serena which was being driven by a 68-year-old man from Newhaven.
Mr Sawa, from Brighton, was thrown from his bike. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at the roadside but he died at the scene.
A month ago the Cityclean worker won a Brighton and Hove City Council award after he was nominated alongside colleagues for helping a woman who fell and hurt her hand in the city.
People contacted The Argus after learning about the crash and realising it was Mr Sawa who was involved.
One man who works for Cityclean, for which Mr Sawa drove a street-cleansing vehicle, said: “Jacek was a lovely bloke.
“I didn’t know him well but I saw him often and he always said hello.
“He was close to the other workers, was friendly and a lovely man. Everyone is very sad.”
Mr Sawa’s team leader at Cityclean, Mick Sutton, said: “Jacek was a very valued and popular member of staff who will always be remembered for his gentle, kind nature.
“He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.”
On The Argus website people also paid tribute to Mr Sawa . One woman wrote: “RIP Jack, you were possibly one of the nicest guys I had the pleasure to know.
“The sky has a bright star now. You will be so missed. Rest peacefully my friend.”
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, at the junction with Lyon Close, at 6.25am. Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Button.
