Giant egg found floating off Brighton coast 'was relatively fresh'
2:40pm Tuesday 4th September 2012 in News
A rare egg that was found floating off the Brighton coast has now been hollowed out.
The egg of a rhea – a large, flightless bird from South America – was found floating between the pier and marina last month and has now been emptied by John Cooper at the Booth Museum in Dyke Road, Brighton.
Mr Cooper said the contents removed from the egg were not an embryo but were relatively fresh which indicated that the egg may have come from a bird in the UK or Europe rather than South America as originally suggested.
Mr Cooper said he remained keen to put the egg on display but currently lacked the space to exhibit the six-inch long specimen.
