Giant egg found floating off Brighton coast 'was relatively fresh'

BIG EGG: John Cooper of the Booth Museum with the rhea egg shortly after it was discovered BIG EGG: John Cooper of the Booth Museum with the rhea egg shortly after it was discovered

A rare egg that was found floating off the Brighton coast has now been hollowed out.

The egg of a rhea – a large, flightless bird from South America – was found floating between the pier and marina last month and has now been emptied by John Cooper at the Booth Museum in Dyke Road, Brighton.

Mr Cooper said the contents removed from the egg were not an embryo but were relatively fresh which indicated that the egg may have come from a bird in the UK or Europe rather than South America as originally suggested.

Mr Cooper said he remained keen to put the egg on display but currently lacked the space to exhibit the six-inch long specimen.

"lacked the space to exhibit the 6 inch long specimen".

Could Argus readers possibly know of a young couple, who recently received much attention, that could perhaps offer advice on exhibiting and finding space for a 6 inch specimen?

Its amazing how many 6 inch specimens that may have been on display during PRIDE weekend and the poor Booth Museum has no space to house this! lol

I cannot believe this story has been given eggstra coverage.

The first rotten story was eggstraordinarily bad and this second follow up article b-egg-ars belief.

Argus, Why not try doing some real invest-egg-ative reporting inst-egg?!

Were all available staff scrambled to rush out this yolk of a news item, which was probably poached from elsewhere anyway? It surely should have been held back until Fryday. Doesn't it make your blood boil?

If it's "relatively fresh" why was it floating? .....don't bad eggs float?

Looks like a very ordinary ostritch egg to me ..and l do believe we have these specimens all over the UK. ...but maybe..just maybe ...it is an egg that has floated down from Scotland..known as the Nessie egg.
Got to love Argus for its 'wonder upon wonder what it is' stories.
