A teenage boy was attacked near Palace Pier on Saturday.
The 16-year-old was walking along the Lower Promenade, alone when the assault took place at 11.30pm.
He received a three-inch laceration to the head which required several stitches at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital , Brighton.
Police said they believed there was one suspect who was with a larger group of men.
The suspect is described as a mixed race man, aged in his late teens to early 20s, 5ft 7ins and of small build, with black hair worn in a braided style.
Police believe there were other people present not involved with the assault and are urging them to come forward.
Detective Constable Aran Boyt said: "This was a nasty attack on a lone teenager who was celebrating the Pride Festival. The reasons for why he was targeted are not clear at this time."

Let's hope the Sussex police catch this coward and send him away for GBH for the full 5 year maximum sentence. I wonder how he'd react to a life in prison.
The Tories really shouldn't cut the police budget which is obviously hitting frontline policing. The bureaucrats need to go and the police back on the streets. I always thank them on a night out when they come to check if my and my mates are okay. Tough job, and deserve the respect.
Sussex police, for the sake of this young man - catch them!
