Dates set to close Brighton's North Street for temporary repairs

Brighton's North Street will be closed to traffic for two days for temporary repairs on September 18 and 19.

The city council announced it would be undertaking the work last month, but refused to say when - or who is paying

This morning, a spokesman apologised for the "inevitable disruption" it will bring, adding: "these works are for essential safety maintenance on one of the city’s most well-used routes and bus corridors and it is not possible to carry them out without closing the road."

The road will be closed from 7am on Tuesday. No precise time is set for its reopening.

The council spokesman added: " We are currently talking to businesses in the street to inform them about the works and are liaising with bus companies to set up diversion routes.

"We are also engaged in ongoing discussions with other agencies to find a long term solution."

North Street has deteriorated following extensive roadworks by utility companies - 170 in the past five years.

Road users first started reporting issues after Southern Water and Southern Gas Networks started laying pipes in the street in 2007.

In April this year, Brighton and Hove Buses stopped using the route temporarily saying the road's condition was so bad its buses were becoming grounded.

Following the resurfacing, the substructure of the highway will be examined with a view to more permanent repairs being carried out.

Well the 2 days will be up on the Thursday morning but don't count on it being open then.It is the busiest Street in the City and they start at 7am why not night work?

I'm not an expert, but, isn't night road work slower and more expensive? Not to mention than nearby residents will not be able to sleep. Two days of rerouted buses and day work will be a minor nuisance if we want it quick and cheap. North Road is quite noisy as it is, I don't think will notice the difference. And it's not like shops will have to close, there will still be pedestrian access and tourists are leaving anyway.

Also did you realise there aren't that many Residences in North St, the only one that I can think of is the Student Accommodation next door to the old Hanningtons.

i believe the council are still in dispute over who is responsible for the proper repairs but realise something needs doing now but do not want to have to pay the full cost, also not sure if they are fully aware of the extent of work required as there are big problems with the hardcore previously used by all the different utility companies over the years.

yes, much like that pedestrian who was in collision with a bus today, or the cyclist who after jumping a red light rear ended a taxi, or the skateboarder who took a spill after hitting a dip in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD at about 20mph.
so yes, for 2 days(ish) the amount of "accidents" involving taxis and buses will go down

2 days thats ambitious! What about when the roadwork guys have to pack up at 2 in the afternoon for liquid refreshment? As with most road works in Brighton or nationally when do you actually see those guys working>?There was some temporary traffic lights in westdene Eldred avenue the other day (temporary?thats a laugh) think they were there for a few weeks and i dont think there was actually anything being done>i think they were just set up for a laugh.Another weapon in the greens hate car campaign i fear...
