Brighton's Old Steine fountain out of action

Council chiefs have apologised after a fountain remained out of action.

The Old Steine fountain in Brighton stopped working last month because of a technical problem.

Brighton and Hove City Council said then it would be back up and running in days.

However, the local authority said this was not yet possible as problems were more serious than first thought.

A council spokesman said: “A new pump is needed, but unfortunately we’ve found there is also an underground fracture to the drainage pipe that needs fixing before the pump can be installed. There is also a problem with the lighting.

“We’ve asked our contractors to carry out the necessary repairs as soon as possible.”

More infrastructure that has been ignored by our useless tax collectors as they waste money on PC schemes instead of looking after our heritage.

They're actually restoring the Madeira Drive lift at the moment. The Clock Tower has been restored once already but the tide ball has been switched off - some people didn't like the noise. If you can find the money for the rest of them, please tell us.

The West Pier is a lost cause.

the pump on my dishwasher died last week. The engineer said I hadn't rinsed the dishes enough before putting them into the machine.
I said that in the 30 years I'd been using dishwashers, I hadn't felt the need to clean the dishes totally before putting them into a cleaner, and that this was the first time I'd had this problem.

Clearly, the washer was either broken, for faulty by design (I'd only had if for 18 months), but he wouldn't have any of it.

Just goes to show

Somewhere in that area there is an access point to the main Sewer that runs under London Rd and Lewes rd.I remember going down there with the school. It was amazingly clean. All of the gardens that used to run from Preston Park to the Steine used to be kept immaculate with flowers. What happened? All of the Fountains used to have lighting that changed colour it looked great in the evening.Seems like we could do with a few more workers instead of overpaid paper shufflers.

the money could be found easily, by stop wasting our money on ridiculous road schemes that never work and need re doing time and time again. surely it is important to have the city looking great, as anyone would like their own house to look, after all the city is our house, so smarten it up please, can we have consistent paving and road surfaces, great lighting and seating and planting would make a good start. you may find visitors and residents will then respect it.

Our Victorian forefathers built Brighton up to the great (in size) town has been for over a century. They installed things like drinking fountains and public toilets. Why have these all gone? Why force ordinary peasants to pay silly prices in shops for bottled water? Why shut public toilets just because a small minority carry out unnatural practises in them?
Brighton was a great resort. now it's the last resort...

In the and 60's the fountain always worked and had the different lighting effects at night. Surely with technology and a bit of skill the fountain can be the magical sight it once was. The Council are quick to find the cause/excuse but if only were as quick for the repair!

Well it is down to priorities; ours unfortunately are welcoming various types of travellers and the mess they create, demonstrators; and this is a very important right that should not be misused otherwise we will lose it, and cyclists

The biggest problem is that since the 60s many thousands of Born and bred Brightonians have left the City and newcomers over the years have failed to realise how it was.Does anyone remember the Flower beds in Preston Park which were planted out with emblems of different towns? A lot of the small railings around the lawns have been removed over the years so now people just use the lawns as a short cut instead of keeping to the pathways.
