Water firm could face charges over sea sewage

A water company which dumped tons of raw sewage into the sea faces possible criminal charges.

For more than 36 hours, Southern Water pumped the waste just off the East Worthing coast after it experienced problems with its water treatment works in Western Road.

Swimmers have been advised by Worthing Council to stay out of the water from Southwick to Ferring as the Environment Agency (EA) works with Southern Water to prevent further risk to the beach.

A spokesman for the EA confirmed it has launched a criminal investigation and will take “appropriate action” pending the outcome.

Worthing resident Sue Mulholland went for a swim on Monday morning after not seeing any red flags on the beach.

She said: “I was horrified, spat as much water out as I could and scrambled out of the water as fast as the seaweed and sloping stones would let me.

“Needless to say I headed back for a very thorough shower. I returned to the promenade less than an hour later and searched for a sign.

“Eventually, I found an A4-sized piece of paper attached to a small signpost. There were no hazard signs or exclamation marks or the usually red triangle or circle.”

Southern Water has apologised after it blamed a build-up of non-biodegradable items, such as nappies and sanitary towels, for the pump failure.

A spokesman added: “We can confirm we stopped releasing wastewater flows through the emergency, short sea outfall on Monday.

“Staff have been working 24/7 at the treatment works since the problems began on Saturday night.

“Diverting wastewater into the sea, via the emergency outfall, was necessary to prevent localised flooding in Worthing.

“Repair work is continuing on site today and there will be a full investigation into the incident.”

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaign director Andy Cummins said he wanted better safeguards to stop a repeat of these incidents.

He added: “It’s disappointing to see yet another serious failure in Southern Water’s sewerage infrastructure resulting in more beaches been closed off due to the significant health risks.

“Obviously improvements need to be made with the maintenance regimes and safeguards are needed in their sewerage system to protect popular bathing waters from repeated discharges of raw sewage."

Worthing Lib Dem Leader and shadow cabinet member for environment Alan Rice said: “Only in June we had raw sewage deposited in Homefield Park. We need to know the real problems behind these incidents, whether they are linked and we need a permanent solution to safeguard the health of Worthing’s residents and visitors.

"This is why Worthing Lib Dems are calling on Southern Water today to come clean with the Environment Agency and Ofwat – warts and all.”

Everytime a complaint is made to Southern Water about the stink people in Lancing and East Worthing have to put up, with it is the same reply, 'we are having trouble with one of our pumps'. This excuse has been used for the last eighteen months, now this disaster, perhaps it is now time to buy some new pumps.

I went for a swim at Southwick after work on Monday unaware of what had happened having just returned from holiday that weekend. I saw no signs or warning flags.

This simply is not good enough from Southern Water. Can I hold them accountable if I come down with something nasty (e.g. e.coli, hepatitis etc)? I bet not.

Apparently they can't put red flags up as they haven't got any poles.

CaUsed by a build up'
they earn millions a year, don't build any new reservoirs to store water & now cannot even monitor their treatment works. Can you know which personnel are going to resign or be sacked for not doing their job?

I went swimming near the Palace Pier, accidentally swallowed some sea water, and have been laid up with a throat bug for a fortnight.

So much for their EU clean water badge.

For a lot of employers
On paper it probably seems cheaper to get rid of staff , after all you then don’t have to pay wages /holiday /sick / or pension pay ..
The trouble is if you then have to use the contractors more than you thought you would have too , it can be very expensive for a company.

Employers can and have changed the terms and conditions and cut the pay off their staff.
Unfortunately for most of the staff , jobs are hard to come by at the moment ,so even though they take home less money ,they have to stay in a job where they feel undervalued and demoralised and stressed about lack of money .

This seems to be the way that some privatised companies work nowadays.

Swa is a privatised company and is there for all about making money for its shareholders.
The decision for paying out less money for staff / new equipment and maintenance cut backs, comes from the top it also leads to a “technical error” .

I would like to know how much money is being used to pay the annoying child advertising the don’t waste water advert on the radio all day long.
What a total waste of money that is.

They have to say that as they are not allowed to say to customers ..
“Why did you buy a home next to a smelly pumping station..”

They spend thousands of pounds on “nice” smelling chemicals to stop people complaining ..
Over the years this money could have been spent on buying new pumps .

Hi, I must admit I totally agree with your last writer Carlos; the only difference is they have the time scale of 18 months wrong. I have lived in East Worthing for 20 years and that has always been Southern Water's excuse that they had a slight problem with their pumps but alls good now. As a neigbourhood water committee member several years ago they even had the audacity to take us round the Western Road plant showing how modern it was and the proverbial promise we would never again suffer any smells in the local area. What tosh, year in and year out when ever there is a Easterly or North Easterly wind theres the smell. They even give us a hotline number to ring if we smeel their purfummed sewarage but beleive me irrispective of the call nothing is ever done yet theri water bills never fail to sore every year. What we need is a new, proficient and to the point honest new company or management. Michael

It would surely come under the "Duty of Care"or in this case lack of.Nursing Homes and Hospitals get slated for not providing providing a proper Health Care why should Southern Water be treated any differently. There was always a Chemical smell in the Air when the wind was blowing in from the East similar to Spirit of Salts, when I lived in the Area.

You do not swim near the Pier, you just go through the motions.

This is what happens when you let the Conservatives in power - they sell off everything and put it in the hands of their corrupt friends - who've donated to Con' party funds of course - and then they're only interested in making money and profit - don't ever vote them in again please people - they are the worst party.
