Swimmers warning after Worthing sewage leak

The faulty sewage treatment works which dumped tonnes of waste into the sea has now reportedly been fixed.

The Environment Agency has announced that Southern Water’s East Worthing plant is now back online – but still warns swimmers not to enter the water.

Samples were taken on Monday and Wednesday with the results due back today (September 7).

They report that there has been no further spillage since Monday at 9.30pm.

A joint statement from the Agency and Worthing and Adur councils, said: “We continue to advise people not to swim between Southwick and Ferring until full confirmation of the sample results are received.

“Officers have been on site to assess the impact of the sewage as part of an on-going investigation into what has happened.

“Pending the outcome of that investigation they will look to take appropriate action.”
