Hove statue prank is undie investigation
A regal statue has been given an unwelcome makeover by a cheeky reveller.
A prankster scaled the bronze statue of Queen Victoria in Grand Avenue, Hove, and stretched a pair of underpants across her face.
The insult has now dragged on for more than a week despite the statue being right outside council offices.
The statue was originally put up to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1897 but was not officially unveiled until 1901 – the year of her death.
It sits opposite King’s House which is the workplace of scores of public servants, including the local authority’s senior officers, senior councillors, finance and human resources teams.
Nicholas Barrett of Grand Avenue, said he first spotted the pants last Monday.
He said: “I thought somebody would be there in two minutes to whip them down. I thought somebody must care about them especially when it is right outside King’s House.
“Probably when Queen Victoria was on the throne it would have been regarded as a capital offence but I guess she’s slipped down the agenda.
“It’s not an easy thing to do to climbing up there.
“It was probably done by somebody cheered on by their mates who had had a bit of something to drink to steady their nerves.”
A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: “The removal of items from the city’s statues is carried out when a suitable vehicle is in the area, such as a cherry picker used for lighting repairs.
“The cost of putting up scaffolding or sending a vehicle on a one-off trip is not a suitable use of taxpayers’ money.
“We’re aware of the clothing on Queen Victoria's statue which has been reported and should be removed within the next week.”

How did Nicholas Barrett of Grand Avenue really think someone would be there in 2 minutes to 'whip them down' (nicely phrased). Or was he talking about his own?

From what I've read about her she was a bit of a girl. I'm sure it's not the first time she's had someone else's undercrackers on her face.

No you would rather spend over £100,000 on a chewing gum removal machine that didn't work.

THIS IS A HATE CRIME AND THE VANDALS MUST BE HUNTED DOWN AND PUNISHED. THE UNDERCRACKERS MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY AS THIS... IS HALLOWED GROUND. PEOPLE MAY THINK THIS IS A PRANK BUT THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HUMOUR IN THESE SORTS OF HATEFUL ATTACKS ON THE GAY COMMUNITY.

I am sure that Her Majesty Queen Victoria would have been amused at the amount of coverage given to this silly prank.
