Has Worthing College graduate Eddy String got the X Factor?
He's a Robbie Williams fan who is trying to impress Gary Barlow.
He has been compared to Frankie Cocozza but wants to be like Mick Jagger.
Eddy String may be a mass of contradictions but one thing is for certain – he is on the brink of the big time after a successful audition on The X Factor.
The 18-year-old got a unanimous “Yes” from The ITV show’s judging panel on Sunday.
And by Monday night he was already causing a stir in Brighton’s West Street and King’s Road Arches.
He said: “We went to Oxygen and Coalition.
“Everyone was a bit unsure, then one person would say, ‘Oh my god, it’s Eddy String’, and it went mental”.
Eddy says his style makes him appear easy to pigeonhole.
He said: “I’m fine with being compared to Russell Brand or Frankie Cocozza but it’s a little bit lazy.
“There aren’t many outgoing, slightly effeminate British people these days.
"Everyone’s a bit conscious of standing out.
“I think more Marc Bolan or Mick Jagger.”
He admits he is a Robbie Williams fan, a legacy of his mother’s taste in music, while he inherited a love of Queen fromhis father.
Eddy has recently finished his A-Levels in music and English at Worthing College, winning a place at the London College of Communication.
Eddy has played in bands in Sussex since he was 13, including Reaction and Kickfist.
They graced venues including Pressure Point, Concorde 2 and The Latest Music Bar, with Eddy’s favourite ever gig taking place at the now-defunct Free Butt.
And when he saw his X Factor appearance for the first time on Sunday, he could see there was room for improvement.
He said: “I was dreading it a little bit.
“I thought it was pretty average vocally.
“I’m not a brilliant singer, but I’m all right when I’m on form.”
Eddy is performing at Bar 42 in Marine Parade, Worthing, on Friday.
And his new fans can find out how he gets on at The X Factor’s Boot Camp later this month.
