Former News of the World editor and Argus columnist Derek Jameson dies

Newspaper legend Derek Jameson has died, it was announced last night.

The 82-year-old had a column in The Argus during the 90s and during his career also edited three national newspapers.

His wife Ellen told last night how he had suffered a heart attack at home.

Mr Jameson edited the Daily Express, the Daily Star and the News of the World and was also managing editor of the Daily Mirror.

The former Argus columnist was also a popular presenter on BBC Radio 2 and went on to present a chat show for six years with his wife, establishing the largest late night radio audience in Europe.

See tomorrow's Argus for a full report and tributes.

One of those "know it all" and loudmouth celebrities. Not my cup of tea.

I'm so sorry to hear Derek Jamieson has passed. I used to love listening to he and his wife on the radio, and reading his reports etc. I once wrote to Derek back in the 90s...he did reply. I cannot remember, it was something I think to do with journalism...I know I only achieved having a community column in The Argus, and I know my grammar is definitely not as good as many other journalists including Derek Jamieson, but I have never given up, and I know I think chatted about the hobby mag then non-profit mag I did. R.I.P Derek, you did a great job, and I can also remember the humour, you always managed to help me smile with such great humour...
