Tourism and sport pledge from Brighton MP
12:50pm Thursday 13th September 2012 in News By Tim Ridgway, Local government reporter
AN MP has promised to promote sport and tourism in Sussex after being appointed to an influential post.
Simon Kirby , who represents Brighton Kemptown, has been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and Tourism.
This is not a Government post but it does give Mr Kirby direct access to decision makers as the minister’s representative in the House of Commons.
Mr Kirby said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this influential role, which will allow me to be a strong voice for my constituency on two issues that are very important to the area; sport and tourism.
“Tourism has been central to the area’s development over the last 250 years, and will play a crucial role in its future. It benefits the local economy to the tune of more than £1 billion and supports tens of thousands of jobs.
“Both sport and tourism are incredibly important to Brighton Kemptown. I am very pleased that I will now be able to advance the interests of the area from a position of real influence.
“I look forward to working with Hugh Robertson to build on a remarkable summer of British sport, and drive forward the Government’s tourism strategy.”
The position means Mr Kirby will have to abide by the policy of the Government and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
It is also seen as the first step to becoming a salaried minister.
