Commuters face delays of up to an hour after a train broke down.
The incident on the London to Brighton mainline took place at about 6.30am today in Balcombe, near Haywards Heath.
All services between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport are affected.
A spokesman for Southern warned of delays of up to 60 minutes.
He added it and First Capital Connect were accepting each others tickets while rail replacement buses are in operation.
