Rottingdean burglary victims tidy away crimescene

Victims of a burglary unwittingly thwarted a police investigation by tidying up the crime scene.

The householders in Chailey Avenue, Rottingdean, had heard an intruder in their home between 10.30pm and 11pm on Monday night.

They found someone had been in the house and jewellery was missing. They tidied up and waited until the following morning to call police.

Sergeant Chris Lane, of Sussex Police , said there was no evidence left for scenes of crime officers to gather.

He said: “We would urge people, if they disturb someone committing a burglary, to call us. We will do whatever we can to get there.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101.

It is reprehensible to only "do whatever we can" why not a firm commitment ?? Or do Poliice only now work office hours ?

If you are talking about Sgt Chris Lane I would agree with you.

Why would you not call the Police straight away? The Victims are either very stupid or very Guilty.

I nearly coughed my coffee up then reading this....so a victim has the trauma of their home intruded and they are expected to await a call 'sometime' the next morning.

Sorry, I am by far Anti-Police but this just isn't on.

A burglary is said to be mentally as bad as crime that I won't say, the Police know this.....

It says that they (the homeowners) waited until morning to call the police, not that they were told to wait.

Their unfortunate mistake to make. I can appreciate wanting to clear a mess up and get back to normal ASAP. They probably din't realise the implications.

Having once been attacked by a drunken stranger in the street and phoning the police while restraining him being asked if I could bring him to the Police station the following afternoon I would have to question what "We will do whatever we can to get there” actually means in real terms.

How fortunate that our Ambulance and Fire services have a somewhat different interpretation of the word "emergency services."

Oh get that chip off your shoulder. Of course they're going to do 'whatever they can'. What do you want from them? A 100% guarantee that they'll catch and convict the people responsible? You're either very naive or very stupid if you think this is what will happen.

Sounds to me like an attempt at claiming insurance!
