Brighton's North Street shut for two days

CLOSED: North Street in April CLOSED: North Street in April

Buses will be diverted as a busy thoroughfare is shut for two days.

Traffic in central Brighton was brought to a standstill in April when Brighton and Hove Bus Company stopped its drivers from using North Street amid safety concerns.

Brighton and Hove City Council will now carry out work on the cracked and uneven street.

The road will close in its entirety between the Clock Tower and Castle Square from 5am today until early evening tomorrow.

All westbound services will instead go via the seafront and West Street, rejoining normal routes at the Clock Tower.

Those travelling east will divert via Queens Road and North Road.

Between 7am and 8pm on both days, a free shuttle bus will operate between Old Steine stop E and St Peter’s Church to allow passengers to transfer to other routes.

Before 7am and after 8pm on both days, services being diverted down
North Road and heading north will go back down to Old Steine to loop around.

Buses will regain the normal route at the bus stops in front of the Royal Pavilion.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove Bus Company said: “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and delay caused by these diversions.

“We will be closely monitoring all these arrangements and operate services as best as we possibly can.”

0730 and chaos reigns in West Street and along the seafront! It took me 40mins to go from the old Steine to West Street!

I nteresting to see Shuttle Buses being used maybe they will eventually run them between the Steine and Palmeira Sq.

If virtually all the bus services run along a single road then when that road needs to be dug up (as happens so often), repaired (as now) or an accident happens then chaos follows

Perhaps some more imagination is needed from the bus company.... then we could have some other routes that don't all go via West street. That would give some faster journeys - maybe even have east-west options that don't all go to the town centre

Please be aware that stop Z has number 1 buses going in both directions, so check the buses direction or you may end doing what i and many others did this morning by not checking the buses direction and unknowingly getting on a number one bus for Whitehawk that looped round the Steine and we ended up back at St James Street, having then having walk back back to stop Z for a number one bus back to Portslade

I might be wrong, but wasn't this road recently dug up for repairs and resurfacing?

Just another question: As the majority of the traffic along this road are buses, does anyone know if Brighton and Hove bus company contributes to the upkeep of the road (apart from the usual tax that all business pay)?

Thanks.x

Tell you what they want re-suface all of the road from Preston Circus Firestation all the way on the one way system to the sea front, that piece of road is horrendous and old and full of holes and bumps. It's a busy road and people must moan all the time. However, because it's not used my Roger French's buses (Well not all of it), I doubt it will get fixed. The road from St Peters church going to the Seafront is awful, never been properly repaired or re-surfaced. As for North Street, no wonder its cracking up, it has hundreds of 15 odd Tonne Buses hurtling up and down it each day, I'm surprised it lasted this long!!!

Here we go again. All aboard the knock B&H buses band wagon. Personally I think we have a superb bus service and fail to understand the constant carping, especially towards Roger French.
We have a modern fleet of buses trying to operate within the confines of a road system designed and built many, many years ago.
Where are these imaginative new routes to appear from?
Yes buses are heavy, they can carry upwards of 70 people so what's the answer...rickshaws?
It often seems some people won't be happy until we get rid of the bus service. Some suggest the council runs it....any idea how much that would cost to set up? More than we could possibly afford.
Wouldn't it be great if more comments came forth with positive ideas instead of the constant moan, moan, carp, sneer that is the norm on this site??

Totally agreed. The bus service is brilliant and if you compare that to the mid sussex bus service and I'm just glad I have my car to get about otherwise I would be stranded. Same story with the likes of Worthing and most of Sussex where B&H buses dont get to. But the thing is Roger French has real power in the city, he says and gets what he wants pretty much all the time. Why aren't other road surfaces replaced when they should be? As I said the road surface to the seafront and around Victoria Gardens is horredously bad and well overdue a fresh road surface.

Agreed. The bus service is excellent, and good value compared to other pparts of the country (London excepted). Comfortable, modern buses, frequent services, increasing numbers of night buses.

I clearly ask if Brighton & Hove bus company pay anything towards the upkeep of roads ( they damage) APART FROM THE USUAL TAX THAT ALL BUSINESS PAY.

I guess you think that no one else pays tax, road tax (which doesn't exist anymore, its vehicle emission tax!), diesel tax?

If you don't have an answer to my question....don't bother to reply!

And so its gridlock around North Road/Spring gardens and queens road areas and not just because of the works in North Street i fear.Im sure the lights at the bottom of north road have now been phased to take even longer to change to green.Another council ploy to hack all the good motorist people of our Brighton?Maybe they should change their name to the "We like creating traffic jams party

Please explain where, exactly, i have slagged off B+H bus company?

Asking a question = slagging off!? Hopefully you will learn to read and understand big words one day soon.

Does anyone with real input have an answer to the original question, or do i have to put up with Bluemonday's pointless and empty comments?

Apart from the usual taxes, that have already been mentioned B&H buses is not contributing to the work that's being carried out. The re-surfacing work is as a result of shoddy repairs during utility work, which had left pot holes, and dips, in the road. The work is mostly, as far as I'm aware, being funded by these utility companies.

I can understand other posters assumption that your original comment was an attack, or anti, B&H buses. It comes across as if you're implying that the bus company should be paying more.

surely if the repairs are because utility contractors didn't do the job properly, then those contractors should be footing the bills to repair their shoddy work! this is the same everywhere, as contractors are not road builders, and don't have a clue how to put them back together. the bus company doesn't need to put any money in, as road repairs are covered by council tax, or money from central government. you certainly do have one of the very best bus services in the country, and very reasonably priced, in the main. the only thing missing is a decent Park & Ride system!
