Man hit by lorry in Hove street

A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a lorry.

The accident happened at around 3:30 this afternoon outside Cafe Nero on New Church Road in Hove.

The road is currently closed while investigators examine the scene.

An air ambulance landed nearby and dropped off three specialist clinicians before the man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

More to follow.

Not mentioning the mangled bicycle next to him that I presume was his then?

Really hope he is alright, it looked very serious.

I also saw the bike, but no mention here. Having an air ambulance land means it must be quite serious, I hope he is ok.....it was astonishing how many people continued to drink their Cafe Nero drinks sat at tables outside, I would have had to have moved out of respect.

I believe the trucks should not run in the city ... It was BAD ...

andros: Would you be able to tell us if the man was on his bicycle when he got hit? was he on the bike lane? (I am a cyclist who lives in that road and so I regularly use that lane).

So sorry you must be in shock and terribly worried, I imagine the Argus will update when they have more information from police and/or hospital, keep checking here, otherwise I don't think you would be able to find out yourself from police etc.

Hi yellowbeargriff ... sorry if I make some mistakes, I am Italian. I live in Albany Villas. I first heard the guy shouting, thing which drawn my attention, then I saw the guy sliding down toward the lorry trying to call help, to tell to the driver he was there. They were few seconds, I saw the lorry passing on his body I believe on the chest. After the lorry passed through I saw a bike in the street, I believe the guy was with his bike. I believe some how he lost the control of the bike and finished under the lorry. I also think the guy was drinving on the footpath. I run close to him because I thought he was a friend of mine. I saw him in very a bad condition .. I then realized I could not do anything, I started feeling bad as well, I left and went home. I am very sensitive, I could not stand it, but if the police needs me to bear I can do it. I hardly believe he was with his bike, but you know, everything is possible. I actually saw him while was sliding under the truck.

ATTENTION: I left after the people all around had already called the ambulance and they were helping him, otherwise I would have never left. Well, again, I saw him sliding under the truck and the truck passing over his body, THEN I saw the bike, so I made the connection, I thought he lost the control of the bike.

It's just so awful - I hope you & everyone else who saw it is ok too, Andros.
.
This happens every day & it really is about time it was tackled properly. You'd think with having the Greens in & a famously cycling PM that this problem could be solved. Couldn't lorries have sensors on the side that detect cyclists? Would an extra, specially sited mirror help at all?
.
Best wishes to all concerned.

This goes to show that no matter what measures are taken to seperate different types of road users, there will always be accidents.
I drive HGV's and there is no need to keep them out of town centres. Not is there a need to have more mirrors. What's needed is better understanding between different groups of road users of how the others are likely to react. I walk, cycle, drive cars and motorbikes and HGV's. I am always mindful of what other road users might suddenly do.
From reading the unconfirmed eyewitness report, the HGV driver might be at fault for being on a pavement. Until it is fully reported we will not know.
Unfortunately many times I have had cyclists create situations where if it were not for the drivers awareness of them and taking action they would have been seriously injured.

Andros, you are a witness to this appalling accident and the police would be very grateful to have your account of what happened. It sounds like you are an important witness.

Are you OK?

I hope the person recovers.Remember if you cant see them (in the mirrors) they can't see you.

Please Argus - let us know how he is getting on. It was fantastic how quick the emergency services got there. It was horrendous that some people still sat outside drinking their coffee.

The lorry driver was also there for a very long time after the man went to hospital. I know he's not the one in intensive care but he looked in a great deal of shock and sorrow as well :(.

I crossed Church Road towards Grand Avenue in front of this truck before it tore around the corner and hit the cyclist. The sound of the accident and the was terrible. Amazing that all services were there in a couple of minutes. I wish him luck

By "Hove street," they mean a street in Hove, not Hove Street.
