Hope he's ok and says a big thank you to the RNLI for saving his life and all of them having to get out of their warm beds in the middle of the night - well done to them!

Could he have been fishing on the pier?

I know that one shouldn't make assumptions, but most (sane) people don't go swimming in the sea at Eastbourne in the middle of the night... And it is quite an unusual spot for a suicide attempt.
