Brighton Station revamp: what do you think?
9:29am Wednesday 26th September 2012 in News By Tim Ridgway, Local government reporter
MAPPED: How the south entrance to the station will change under the plans
Radical plans to change the layout of Brighton Station have been unveiled.
About 1,400 people took part in consultation earlier this year on three options to improve the space in front of the station.
Now, bosses at Brighton and Hove City Council have come up with revised plans to improve the gateway to the city .
They believe the proposal balances the needs of all the 14.5 million recorded passenger numbers that pass through the area every year.
Council leader Jason Kitcat said: “I think the plans are very positive and provide an option which meets the needs of all the users of the station while radically improving the built environment.
“It’s a very busy area – it’s the 13th busiest station in the country – and there’s always a balance to meet the needs of motorists, cyclists, buses and taxis that use the area.”
Plans to revamp the area have been talked about since 2010.
Among the planned changes will include the taxi rank being moved from directly in front of the station.
A new public area will be created which could contain some cycle parking, small stalls, and a new pedestrian route to North Laine and Queens Road.
A new ticket office, which will also act as a tourist centre, will be created outside the Victorian building.
In its place, a taxi rank will be created in Frederick Place, which is parallel to Queen’s Road and under the bridge in Trafalgar Street.
This will need the traffic flow in Frederick Place and the western ends of Trafalgar Street and Gloucester Road to be reversed.
Buses will remain in their current position although there may be some minor changes to services.
New cycle lanes in Trafalgar Street and Queens Road will allow cyclists to pass in both directions.
Roger French, of Brighton and Hove Bus Company , said: “We’re pleased that this proposal is being brought forward, it makes a lot of sense.”
Andy Cheesman, of City Cabs, said currently only 300 taxis could use Brighton Station and they had to pay £430 a year for the permit.
However, he said the proposed plan would mean all 540 licensed hackney carriages would have access to the area.
Mr Cheesman, who is also the chairman of Queens Road Traders’ Association, said: “I think it’s the best thing that has come forward for this area in a long time.

Seeing as Tim Ridgeway is to lazy to include a link, here's where you can view details about the new proposal,

It's a good point though - our workflow, where reporters file for a linkless paper product, means that links for web are often overlooked, or lost along the way, but it's something I should make more of an effort to dig out. Must try harder!

I'm very concerned, as a cyclist who uses Trafalgar Street every day, twice a day, that I may be mown down by taxis in a hurry, coming out of Frederick Place. I said this in my response to the consultation. I wonder how this will be addressed.

m?request=c1270334 , which has an enormous report linked to which among lots of other things has details of the latest proposals. For those who have the patience to wade through it, you will find that the council reveal their true colours and the real aim behind the scheme are the proposed traffic restrictions which attempt to almost totally cut off road access to the North Laine area and hint that the obvious next step is to also restrict any private traffic in the station area with even more restrictions.
You can guarantee that most of your councillors will not read any of it, so by the time people realise what is happening, it will be too late, and the greens will have struck.

My goodness they kept that quiet didn't they?
Pretending that they think there should be greater access by private vehicles to the city centre and all the time deviously doing something else!

Stuff making more room for them!
More like 3000! Have you seen them blocking the whole of Surrey Street/Queens Road on a Friday & Saturday evening/night?
They should be sent to the back of the Station, then they can block up roads without causing traffic chaos.
There are FAR too many taxis licenced for the Station now, without making more space for them. The Police just sit there and watch them blocking the road up... The Police & Council need to get a grip over the Taxi issues at the Station & Castle Square at weekends... it is beyond a joke now.

WorthingwithoutbusesYes please. It would help if the taxis actually learned to stop at the red light on the crossing opposite the station instead of seeing the lights changing and putting their foot down.

I remember when the transport police did crack down on the taxi's and they all had a little tantrum driving around the railway station tooting their horns all night in protest. I think it should be the council stepping in and temporarily banning taxis that obstruct the road outside ranks

Why isnt there plans for a shuttle from the station to the sea front, that would encourage less visitors to drive.
