Happy ending for 'stranded' Brighton pensioners

Elderly residents are celebrating after a faulty lift was repaired.

Since July 29 the 14-storey Dudeney Lodge in Upper Hollingdean Road, Brighton, has only had a partial lift service.

Residents claimed they have been unable to leave their homes saying Brighton and Hove City Council has ignored their pleas for help.

However, after The Argus reported the story last week , the local authority has since repaired the lift.

Graham Ennis, below, who lives in the block, said: “There are a lot of old ladies that have been able to do their shopping for the first time in two months.

“Some of them were practically rioting when they found out.”

A spokesman for the local authority said the delay in repairing the lift was because the equipment needed was no longer made.

He added it was “virtually impossible” to source replacement parts and that every breakdown needed a visit from a specialist.
