The country’s first state-funded fully bilingual English/Spanish primary school was formally opened yesterday.

Mayor of Brighton and Hove Bill Randall was guest of honour at the official opening of the Bilingual Primary School.

Reception and Year 1 children started at the school on September 4 in its temporary home at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy in Falmer. Work is under way to find a permanent home in Hove or Portslade.

Marina Gutierrez, one of the school’s founders and chair of the board of governors, said: “We are excited to have been given the opportunity to be able to contribute to the diversity of the city by offering the choice of a bilingual education to all the children of Brighton and Hove.”
