Nightmare delays on the A27 Nightmare delays on the A27

Drivers reported nightmare delays on the A27 this afternoon on the first day of a major roadworks project.

Many have been stuck in queues on the A27 between Lancing and Shoreham due to lane closures.

Crews moved in this morning to start a three-month project to improve drainage on the stretch of road and stopped work at 3:30pm when the lane was reopened.

The disruption is set to continue until at least Friday with further lane closures planned.

On the eastbound A27 there will be a lane closure between Manor Road roundabout and 200m past Coombes Road from 9.30am to 4pm for the rest of the week.

On the westbound A27 there will be a lane closure from Old Shoreham Road to Manor Road roundabout from 9am to 3.30pm for the rest of the week.

A combination of daytime off-peak lane closures and overnight lane closures, contraflow or full road closures will be used during the 14-week scheme.

See tomorrow’s Argus for the full story.

It was, but by the Petrol Tanker on the Dyke Slip Road Approach Westbound that seemed to take an eternity to get its tyre changed.

i would suggest any body travelling east to portslade, hove, brighton, from the west ie lancing, worthing, littlehampton, use the train , because my daughter took half an hour to travel from hillbarn traffic lights lancing to manor road, north lancing, at lunchtime today, which is 500 yards in old money...

I'm confused. Where exactly is this photograph supposed to be and why is it just one lane?

It wouldn't be so bad if the A27 was being upgraded to something worthy of the name Motorway. As it is, we are going to suffer months of aggravation, before this useless piece of road becomes a better drained but still useless road.
Our MPs should be demanding that this work is carried out at night, and then demanding for the long term that we in the south finally have a proper road system linking Shoreham to Chichester.
Are our MPs mounting a campaign to do any of this? Given the chaos caused recently when work was done on the A27 near Arundel, it seems the Highways Agency is an unaccountable monster which thinks it can ignore those paying its wages, us road users and taxpayers.
Can the Argus find out if our MPs are trying to make sure traffic chaos is ended swiftly?

Looks like a pic of the A27 just before the A23 junction; not really relevant to the Shoreham - Lancing stretch.

The argus photographer got stuck in traffic from their office at Hollingbury on their way to the scene, so decided to come off at the A23 slip road to take the the action shot as it was happening !!

If everyone took the train, regardless of roadworks, there wouldn't be a problem and also people would have to walk to and from stations, meaning a lot less fat people.

I dont know why or who says there is a problem with the drainage on this stretch of the A27. I have never seen lanes closed due to flooding? May be they should be spending the money on putting drains in at Chichester where there is always a lane closed due to floods caused by the smallest amount of rain.
This is just another waste of public money

Finally the great British public are up in arms about poorly timed roadworks. I noticed that the upgrades to the footpaths on the A27 just west of Polegate were done at night, but on the A259 East of Newhaven, during the day, no continuity.
I have written to the Dept of Transport about the poor state of the roads in the South East this year.
The whole of the South Coast deserves a Motorway, from Chichester to Dover.
I have travelled extensively thoughout the UK and can say with authority that we have the poorest maintained and weakest road system.
The Govt wants to kick start the economy, well build us a Motorway. 'Pse'

Its true, every time it rains the roundabouts on the A27 at Chichester are flooded, this has been going on since it was built. Everybody write to your MP !

I think the lakes on the South side give an indication of the water levels so the road level needs to be raised to solve this issue. As for Lancing the Chalk Downland becomes saturated after heavy rainfall and then has nowhere to go which is what has happened in the recent past.

Hillbarn to the A23 is my daily commute and I haven't seen any problems, even with the recent rainfall. There used to be, years ago, but not now. You get a little water on the flyover and on the Hangleton bit but that's all.

My wife work at Chichester and it's so bad after a little drizzle that she want me to buy her the James Bond car that goes underwater

Trains would be the answer or the way forward, but unfortunately because they are so vastly expensive, people are forced back into their cars!

You're obviously not a rail commuter, or someone who visits Brighton on summer weekends. If everyone took the train - there wouldn't be any room on the trains! Modern, overcrowded Britain needs to have more than one mode of transport. Sorry to burst you're somewhat-simplistic bubble.

Trains are a joke! Overcrowded, delayed an worst of all more expensive that running the car. I go from Durrington to hove everyday with my wife and its 140 pounds each a monthly train ticket. How can that be justifiable? The south coast is in desperate need of a motorway and I for one would not care where they cut up to create one, there will have to be one day but sadly it will come far too late after having wasted lots of money and people's time

predictable and unimaginitive response from an evidently unskilled motorist occasionally forced onto public transport.
Have you still not worked out that the only people in the country who are genuinely unfussed by our atrocious roads, traffic volume, cattle trucks on rails and the astronomical costs of participation in such lunacy are those with the skill to take best advantage of the situation and get on bikes? They are fun. When was the last time you had fun on a bus? There's plenty advanced in age on motorcycles, I'd stop blabbing about short lives before you offend them.
Either do something intelligent or get back in your queue..
See ya...lol

...and to be fair to the way these works are being run, the cones are only out periodically, its clear at the rush hours and the queues are avoidable if you can be bothered to find your way about. I was expecting these works to be a nightmare but they're actually not...yet.
I drive a skip lorry right out of that neck in the woods and I'm in a constant hurry but I haven't been unduly held up by it yet.

Thanks for saving me the bother JSIR, just what I was about to post.

Also it is a myth that just because you take public transport you are healthier. There are a load of overweight people on buses and trains, and some of the fittest people around get to work by car.

Apart from that, your argument is genius, Mr P...

Well, I suppose they'd be fitter but they'd also be skinter, the cost of the train fare at peak time, when you cannot use a railcard, is preposterous.

Stop wining? Certainly not. I love a good Shiraz, or Merlot.

As for your insightful remark about finding another route I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that there is only one other route, the A259 which is already crowded and has roadworks all of its own.

We are reaping the benefits of 25 years of underinvestment in Sussex roads.... Hampshire and Dorset did there part, we are stuck with the nightmare scenario of the A27 which from Chichester to Eastbourne, with the exception of about 6 miles....is a disgrace.

Two days of public fault finding result in the following conclusion:

We (the South East) are being treated shoddily by the Govts Transport Dept.
No investment in infrastructure except for bus and cycle lanes.
Poor construction and a lack of forsight.
As for the Green's, if we all drove tiny electric cars we would still have traffic problems and more cars left by the side of the road out of juice. Motorbikes are ok if you want to arrive at work bloody and covered in dirt, trains are ok if you live next to the station and have lots of money.

Everyone ,write to your MP, Now !

Actually about 50 years, since the Folkstone to Honiton Trunk Route was first aired.

And the fact that the A27 disappears at Pevensey to be replaced by 'B' roads.
