Brighton and Hove Albion's Lancing training ground plans backed by councillors
9:32pm Monday 1st October 2012 in News By Neil Vowles
Albion bosses are celebrating after their ambitious plans for a new training ground for the club were backed by councillors.
Adur District Council’s planning committee gave permission for the club to begin work on its £29 million training ground on open land near New Monks Farm in Mash Barn Lane, Lancing, once amended proposals are handed in.
The eight councillors took about 90 minutes to decide unanimously to back the project.
Speaking after the decision, Brighton and Hove Albion director Martin Perry said: “It is a massive decision for the club. It’s a big step forward and we look forward now to developing the site as quickly as we can for Gus and the boys.”
The club hopes work could begin on the site next month. The training ground could be ready to open by the end of 2013.
The site will have 11 outdoor pitches with five for use by the first team and six pitches for academy and community use.
Its distinctive Y-shaped two-storey building, inspired by the art deco design of Shoreham Airport and the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, includes an indoor pitch, changing rooms, a pool, medical facilities, gym, physio rooms and offices for the club’s analysts.
Schoolchildren will be able to watch the first team train.
During the meeting, Mr Perry stressed the economic advantages of the project which is estimated to create about 300 jobs and could inject £3 million worth of building contracts into the local economy.
He urged councillors: “Don’t let the opportunity slip through your fingers.”
A decision was originally expected in May but Albion went back to the drawing board after a number of concerns were raised over noise pollution, access to the site and the impact of extra traffic.
Councillors agreed to grant planning permission, subject to slightly amended blueprints being submitted featuring shorter lighting columns in the car park and alterations to the access road.

One objection was that aircraft landing at Shoreham Airport would mistake the football floodlights for the runway. Small flaw in that argument - Shoreham doesn't allow flights after dusk !!!! Object by all means but putting forward stupid statements like that discredit the whole campaign.

Regardless, it's done now and thankfully The Albion can get building.

Would it not be easier to move the club completely to that site in Lancing? A new railway station specially for the club could be put in along the existing track and there has to be more space for parking around there than there is in Falmer/Coldean. Brighton should be easily able to make use of the Amex stadium for a variety of events.

I forgot to say that the overpaid players can fly into Shoreham airport instead of having to use coaches or cars - I don't suppose many, if any, cycle to work.
I think lots of people would be happy to shift the past and present problems of parking and unruly crowds completely away from Brighton but I don't suppose all that many Lancing residents want them either.

For too long Lancing and Sompting have been neglected and the district has quickly descended into a government recognised area of economic and social poverty.
The fact that these facilities are going to be made available to the local communitly at no cost to the council means there is more money to be spent where it is needed, yet a state of the art sports complex is still provided.
This fits in with the club's community ethos and will benefit both the Albion and Adur.
Well done Sir Martin Perry and Adur council.
PS. Yes I am a season ticket holder but would still think the same if not.

Would have been a nice idea to have a picture of the development in the story rather than a set of flipping adverts!
The Argus has really gone downhill, bring back the Evening Argus, that's the last time I bought this supposed paper!

Nor do I understand what benefits to the community generally, apart from some football pitches being available or what jobs these 300 people will be filling. I suppose they'll need some cleaners and catering staff.
Oh well, Doesn't matter what I think. What Falmer and Lancing Albion want, they get

As to the benefits, well lots of jobs, spend by the Albion with different shops and services in Lancing. The training ground will be available for use by community groups at certin times. Albion in the Community's Disability Centre will be located at the ground and running courses for disabled children and adults. There will be father and son days, as well as local schools invited to attend football training sessions.
The benefits are many and varied, and far outweigh the impacts on local residents.

I regularly pass by the Evesham United complex, that well known hugely supported club. They have a new stadium and 10 practice pitches!
I still don't understand why they need eleven pitches. Does each player have their own? My only concern is the distance to the Amex. I would have thought that something could have been done a littel more locally, at say the racecourse? Anyway too late now, decision made, and great news for the Seagulls.
