Newhaven Port wins offshore wind farm contract

Newhaven Port has won the contract to become the operations and maintenance base for a giant offshore wind farm.

Energy firm E.ON has announced today that Newhaven Port would be the operations and maintenance base for its proposed Rampion Offshore Wind Farm if the development is granted approval.

The move could create up to 85 full time permanent jobs with the majority being recruited locally.

Wonder how this fits in with plans to regenerate the marina into an attractive place to live, work and visit?

Its directly opposite an operational port, what exactly did you/do you expect!!

100 new jobs, and a new sector brought to the town and people still moan!

Will it make Newhaven interesting or desirable at all?

Unbelievable isn't it?

It will bring newhaven jobs, new industry and long term benefits. That might not be enough to attract new residents but if, as the article suggests, most jobs go to existing residents then that is certainly better than a kick in the proverbials and exactly what Newhaven needs.

Newhaven was once a busy commercial seaport, hopefully it will be so again if this deal comes off.
As far as the marina is concerned, if you read the yachting press you will learn that many of the "posh yotties" slate Newhaven at every opportunity, and it would be many years and massive development before it could compete with Eastbourne or Brighton each a few miles along the coast.
So let 'em play to the East and West and let Newhaven return to proper ships and real seamen and dockers again..

Interesting how the enviironment charge round down there putting previously productive operations out of business just to put up some ugly windmills that won't employ any more people than were shooed out to make way for them.
It won't improve, it'll just look worse.

Hopefully, profits will be invested in Newhaven, and make it a decent place to visit. How many French people say "Oooh la la, lets go and get the ferry from Dieppe and have a day out in Newhaven. Sacre Bleu."

and why did Shoreham miss out then? Could have been the final road network through the 30 and 20mph section from Sainsburys they didn't like!!!! Easier to move the extended lengths along the A27 and down past Beddingham than through Portslade.

Mmm Proposed, Could If.......I would not bet on there being 85 jobs anytime soon in Newhaven

With all this lovely new money, perhaps they could mend the steps down to the only sandy beach for miles around?

Newhaven got it because the ships can get in at all states of the tide, rather than just a few hours over the top of the tide at Shoreham. I have to agree though, the best view of Newhaven is through the rear view mirror!

So negative the views of you contributors, correctly.

1. Only a few of the jobs will go to Newhaven people, as you have to have skills and experience.

2. I have objected to the windfarm as you will be able to see it from most of the Sussex Coast.

3. I just hope this dos'nt mean that the A259 Bridge will be up and down more often. You should see the queues now.

4. Maybe they could squeeze the Marina between the Windfarm construction and the 'Seaview' (Garbage Recycling Plant), Joy !
