Seaford church sells the sounds of silence

A Seaford church is giving people the chance to sample its silence.

St Peter’s Church in East Blatchington, Seaford, is bringing out a CD which features almost nothing but peaceful ambience from inside the walls of the 12th century building.

The 30-minute recording begins with a spoken introduction that includes a few words from the Rector, the Rev Canon Dr Andrew Mayes.

He said: “We want to raise the profile of our church, and let people in the neighbour-hood and in the town of Seaford generally, know what we do. St Peter’s has been here 800 years, but we sense we’re Seaford’s best-kept secret.”

The idea came from a friend of the church, Roger Bing.

He produced a silence CD for another church nearly 20 years ago and thought a new one would help St Peter’s to attract new members.

The CD will be available to buy at the church’s open day on Saturday.

Perhaps a recording of the church choir or bell ringing might have been a better idea and would have a broader appeal than a John Cage inspired tongue-in-cheek product. Good luck to them, but I just hope that they haven't pressed a thousand copies.

Wouldn't it be great, though, if you could play something like this and have the recorded silence drown out any ambient noise!

Well you had the opportunity to tell the Argus what it is you do, and all you can think of is to promote a CD of silent ambience....bizarre. Perhaps if you were known for preaching the Gospel and had impact in the local community your whereabouts would not be such a secret. I guess your next sales pitch will be of holy air from the refined atmosphere of your reverred building.
No...please don't use that idea !!!
