Bus lane plans for Brighton's Lewes Road a step closer
2:40pm Wednesday 3rd October 2012 in News By Tim Ridgway, Local government reporter
Radical plans to revamp a dual carriageway and install a bus lane have moved a step closer.
Brighton and Hove City Council has signed off on the proposal, which will also include a separate two-metre wide cycle lanes, for Lewes Road, Brighton, at the council's transport committee yesterday.
It will affect the area north of the Vogue Gyratory junction to the American Express Community Stadium and universities.
However the proposals for the complicated junction near Sainsbury's are to be delayed six months as transport planners take more time to come up with a solution.
The plans include extending the 30mph speed limit northwards to the A27 at Falmer.
Cycle lanes will run behind bus stops onto pavements and 50 parking bays will be removed from the east side of Lewes Road between Natal Road and the Bus Garage.
However some short term parking will remain outside Westons Pharmacy, south of Coombe Road, after a petition of about 350 people was presented.
Formal traffic orders will now be advertised and the plan will come back to another town meeting in November.
It is thought construction could start in December.

If bikes go behind bus stops onto pavement do busses have 4m wide lane at stops? Do bus boarders/exiters have right of way or bikes?
I think the only reason pedestrians are not more concerned about their safety is because there are so few bikes actually using these (very expensive) facilities.

Slow down the bit of road leading to a duel carriageway, that would make it a good place for a speed (cash machine) trap
Ignore the only problem on this stretch of road (the Gyratory)
Narrow the road so we can shoehorn in a Twoooooooo Metre bike lane for those really wide Bikes with sidecars
Claim the locals want it.

The project was 'sold' as improving Vogue Gyratory - but was actually cover to thrown more taxpayers money at a Green Party 'electric bike' experiment.
Now the whole packages has been wrapped into one to get backing, the GP are now dropping the bit the public wanted (Vogue Gyratory improvements) and ploughing ahead with supporting their pet project (electric bike trials) at huge taxpayer expense, for no taxpayer benefit.

When the Labour group were in power, they sent surveys to residents asking if they want an improvement to the gyratory and most said yes, because it's a disaster.
Then the Greens came in and told bare faced lies, stating that people wanted the Lewes Road to be a single lane in each direction for cycles.
They then undertook a survey of 31,000 residents, only 13 per cent responded.
Of the 4,000 or so responses, only 2,650 want the cycle/bus lane. 18 per cent of those who repsonded to the survey were not from the area, so we have no figures as to how many supporters of the scheme actually come from outside the area.
However, if you look on the B&H city council press release archive, you will see the most disgraceful piece of propoganda by the Greens which states: There is overwhelming support for the scheme.
That is an outright, blatant lie and a complete disregard for democracy and truth and I beleive the councillors who signed off that piece of propoganda should be censured for this disgraceful behaviour.

The queue of traffic down Coombe Road and Bear Road was atrocious and this will only get worse with one lane open in each direction, but no-one seems to care apart from those affected. Why would anyone who lives elsewhere give a monkeys. The three councillors representing the ward don't even care as they don't even live in the wards they serve and the Greens live in the city centre so why on earth do they give a toss about people in Bevendean, Moulsecoomb and Coombe Road/Elm Grove.
It was impossible to cycle up Coombe Road last night as there was no room and footy fans were dumping their cars to walk down the hill to the park and ride.
This ludicrous plan is poorly thought out and will cause chaos, but in a way, perhaps it should go ahead, because there really will be calls for the Greens to go.
They should all go back to towns from which they came and annoy their own families and perhaps they would be more accountable because they don't care about us locals.

The most frustrating thing is that I bet most cars using Lewes Road are not going into town, so the bus isn't really an option for them, they're just trying to get to the Vogue Gyratory to get to east Brighton or Fiveways or wherever, and since there's no other main route off Lewes Road all they are doing is making an existing choke point significantly worse.
My suggestion is that every councillor who has backed this move is made by law to drive up and down Lewes Road fur the duration of rush hour every day until construction starts...

But why don't you think your opposition councillors don't vote this down as they are in the majority? It might be that they agree with it, but want the Greens to take the flack as making the changes will result in temporary disruption. What I could find on the council website is...
65% of respondents supported the proposed changes to the Vogue Gyratory. Of these, 79% indicated that they were ‘local residents’.
• 63% supported the introduction of a bus and cycle lane, 79% again being local residents.
• 81% of those who supported the bus and cycle lane stated a preference for separate cycle and bus lanes as opposed to a combined facility.
• The original plans showed that all parking would be removed on Lewes Road south of Natal Road. These have now been adjusted to accommodate some short term parking to serve the local shops, together with disabled parking and a loading facility south of Coombe Road. A taxi rank would also be retained.

Please don't tell me that's the case.
And as I have said this week and James above, there is one lane out at Coldean Lane at the moment and the traffic is queued all the way back to the Mouslecoomb bridge.

As for you HJarrs, the press release would have been agreed by the party so they are complicit.
In fact I shall be sending it to Mr Pickles who got himself in a right pickle about the sort of propoganda being issued by all political parties at the tax payers' expense.
It's abuse of power.
As for the cycle lane this generation is shockingly selfish and parochial. People in Greece are asking their families in the UK to send medicines for illnesses suich as cancer as things are so bad there and here we are taking cash from the EU to close a lane on a road.
It is utter madness, like the pointless cycle counter, posts installed to charge cars which are never used.
Hjarrs, my mum and dad grew up in the war and sometimes didn't know if they would eat. The photos of their childhood are like something from the Victorian times.
They are utterly saddened and upset at the thoughtless waste of money us younger people allow when people are fighting for food and medicine in a modern world where it was promised this wouldn't happen ever again after the war.
I honestly don't know how some people can square this with their conscience.

But still it goes ahead despite:
- not working (as council itself says at gyratory)
- having very few responses so not having clear support
- introducing dangers such as the many turn rights from now single lane (cars will dart into bus lane as they do on other roads, great potential for accidents with fast moving buses) and pedestrians having to cross cycle lanes to get off buses (that's mad!)
Still, the path has been set. And yes, this could and should have been stopped by Labour and the Conservatives voting down Greens. However the traditional parties want to play the long game and show the Greens failing which they will on this. A great pity for residents and for the Greens who are falling into this easy trap....

Why would I get up to speed on a flat, straight route as I do now and then start having to take a windy route involving pedestrians.
That's a really silly idea. A similar example of poor cycle lane planning is the Worthing stretch of the Sustrans route where the commuters stick to the main road and only the kiddies and mums pedal on the shared, windy path, which is generally empty.
Just plain silly.

Pushing the cycles behind the bus stops means he has got the route he wants for these dreadful vehicles which were deemed unsafe in london.
However, I and cycling commuters will still use the main carriageway, so it will be interesting if the council use a traffic order banning cycles from the bus lane.
However, we could still use the outside lane as the council would not have the power to ban us from the public highway.
I saw transport engineers at the Avenue junction at bevendean last week.
As I suspected they were watching the traffic trying to turn right out of this junction onto the Lewes Road which is challenging now but will be impossible without a filter traffic light system with the new system.
If they install new lights here they will be about four metres from a newly installed pedestrian crossing so even more congestion.
It's almost comical but I don't suppose we will see the likes of red face Randall on a bike or Kitty Kat get out of his Regency litter tray.
They just don't care about local people as long as they can drive their ideology through people's lives.

PS - As a Fiveways resident I was sent one of the consultation forms. I didn't return it as it was cleverly structured in such a way that to oppose the changes was akin to saying that you didn't care about road safety. It was obvious they'd made up their minds what they wanted to do and structured the document accordingly.

salty pete, I was out in that torrential rain last night cycling home and I can tell you that no serious commuter cyclist will use a lane which undulates with the pavement and also crosses the bumpy disabled crossings - if you are on a road bike, with slim tyres, you do not use these lanes because they are dangerous when wet. The proposal for cycle lanes on the Lewes Rd is sound but can be undone by poor design by council officers and consultants. Every administration (apart from the last Conservative one) has expanded the cyclepath network. Pretty much every part of that expansion has been compromised by poor design. Hence, instead of concentrating on stopping the development, concentrate on making it work.
As commented above, there are not that many people cycling up the Lewes Rd and the reason is that it is dreadful. Provide good quality infrastructure and that will change. We do want it to change don't we?

The survey did not ask people why they didn't cycle so that is based on your personal comment.
As I said, I've had 44 students live next door to me in a decade. Only two cycled. Every time I ask why they choose taxis or buses they say that the hills in the town are too steep to encourage them to cycle.
I cycle up Bear or Coombe Road every day. It is for the tough and keen and you cannot change topography.

For now we have to put up with the Greens who simply want to be spiteful towards owners of private cars - regardless of the cost to the city.
