A popular park will close for nine months while it is being revamped.

The Level in Brighton has been enjoyed by the public for more than 200 years.

But the open space of 8.5 hectares between Lewes Road and Ditchling Road will be off limits until July as a £2.2 million makeover is carried out.

Brighton and Hove City Council, which is heading up the refurbishment, apologised for any inconvenience but added the work would give it a “new lease of life”.

It is part of a wide scheme to improve the Lewes and London Road areas.

Philip Wells, of the London Road Local Action Team, said: “It is not something we have discussed at the LAT.

“I know we have been looking forward to the redevelopment but it seems a pity that there’s part where people can’t use the facilities for a while.”

The makeover, which is largely funded by a lottery grant, will start on October 15.

Paths around The Level will remain accessible, and the Rose Walk, which crosses the centre of the park, will be open during most of the work.

Among the improvements will be adding a new playground, fountains, a sensory garden, tables for board games and table tennis.

A new café and public toilets will also be added.

The skate park will be moved from its current location to the north part of the park, which is currently flat open space.

It will be carried out by Surrey-based The Gavin Jones Group, which has done projects for the Royal Opera House, London Eye and the 2012 Olympic organisers.

A council spokeswoman said: “The major restoration of The Level is designed to give this open space in the heart of the city a new lease of life and encourage more people of all ages to use and enjoy it.

“While The Level is closed park users are being encouraged to use facilities at other parks in the city.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused while restoration work is in progress.”

A final community event will be held on Saturday October 13 from 12pm to 4pm with an afternoon of sports and games, before work starts.

Information about the plans will be on display while historians will collect people’s memories about the area.

Wild Park seems to be closed for about nine months of the year as well as its a favourite spot for travellers who have once against descended on this neglected part of the town.
The council doesn't seem to care much for the green environment.

Bitterly disappointed that Occupy Brighton supporters will not have access to the space whilst the work is ongoing.

I do hope that the 2 remaining members of that highly successful protest group can find somewhere else to spend their time.

If you ask me the quality of reporting at the Argus is going downhill quicker than the Titanic - how is it possible that a so called ' Professional Title ' has such a glaring and obvious grammatical error in THE HEADLINE - it beggars belief...and I just love the Train Fare increase story which uses the word 'JOY' in reference to a price increase that will still cost most commuters literally hundreds of pounds - Argus Reporters, I suggest you go back to school.

I could not agree with you more. The already atrocious standard of the last couple of years has unbelievably fallen still further the year. Twitter feeds, un edited press release, adverts masquerading as news and the diabolical spelling and grammatical errors. Truly excremental journalism.

The naysayers strike again! What kind of an attitude is that to say it will still be used by druggies and winos. What if everybody decided to just leave places that were neglected to deteriorate further rather than regenerating it to attract people to it who will show it the love and care it deserves? The druggies and winos will move on; as decent, tax-paying people who want the park to be safe and relaxing for their families to enjoy start to actually stand up their right to do so by badgering the police into doing something. I think it's a great idea and will hopefully complement the Mary Portas/London Road regeneration project as well.

I do however, second the comments about the terrible quality of writing in this article in particular. "will be carried out by Surrey-based The Gavin Jones Group, which has done projects for the Royal Opera House,..." Done projects? Not even a journalism student worth their salt would make that kind of mistake. Tsk.

The 'which has done projects' (rather than 'who have done projects') construct is a new Americanism whereby an entity that we view as a plural such as sports team ('Chelsea have the ball on the edge of their penalty area') in America is viewed as a neutral singular ('Pittsburgh has the ball on its thirty yard line').
