Extra work is to be carried out on the A27 to try to tackle a notorious bottleneck.

The Highways Agency today announced £217 million is being spent tackling blackspots along motorways and A-roads.

In Sussex the mouth of the Ford roundabout at Arundel will be widened to allow two lanes of traffic to flow through westbound to cut congestion.

The work is due to begin next year and is likely to cause delays at the busy junction although officials are still drawing up plans for how the work would be done.

Drivers are already facing months of delays on the A27 in roadworks between Lancing and Shoreham.

Commuters reported delays of up to an hour as they tried to negotiate the lane closures last week.

Argus readers took to The Argus website to voice their annoyance at the nightmare delays.

Graham W wrote: “I would suggest anybody travelling east to Portslade, Hove, Brighton, from the west ie Lancing, Worthing, Littlehampton, use the train, because my daughter took half an hour to travel from Hillbarn traffic lights in Lancing to Manor Road, North Lancing, at lunchtime today, which is 500 yards in old money.”

Others used social networking site Twitter to express their frustration. Fortis Law tweeted: “#A27 delays are a nightmare. Getting to Worthing was already difficult enough. We still would hate to see a bypass through the Downs.”

And Simon Garrod tweeted: “Great planning having roadworks on both the A259 and A27 through Lancing. Should really help the commute to work for so many #WellDoneAdur.”

The Highways Agency revealed this week’s lane closures will be the same as last week’s.

It means on the eastbound A27 there will be a lane closure between Manor Road roundabout and 200m past Coombes Road from 9.30am to 4pm each day and on the westbound A27 there will be a lane closure from Old Shoreham Road to Manor Road roundabout from 9am to 3.30pm each day.

Overnight, lane closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am each night in the same locations.
