A27 closed after serious crash

The A27 has been closed following a serious collision at Firle.

Two vehicles have been involved in the accident shortly after 3pm. Police have now closed the road in both directions and traffic is queueing.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "The A27 is currently closed in both directions because of a two-car collison.

"At the moment the injuries of the people involved are not known.

"The road is closed from the Drusilla's roundabout to Beddingham. There are divisions in place and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area as delays are expected for some time. Ambulance and fire are at the scene."

A second crash happened on the A27 at Southwick when a car spun on the eastbound carriageway at 3.45pm. No other vehicle was involved.

No guessing as to whether someone
did'nt have their lights on.
Glad I came home from Eastbourne to Telscombe through East Dean, although I would think the A259 will be very busy soon. Good luck

People drive way too fast on the A27. it's always the same - the road conditions change for the worse and so does the standard of driving

Apparently at 5.30pm the road at Firle was returned to normal, so a continuous queue of traffic then.

This major trunk road should have been made into a dual carriageway years ago.
But thanks to a local MP from a party who advocated cycling and walking and treated the motor vehicle as a pariah, it never came about.
Of course, now the leopard has changed his spots; as has his party who are grasping their only five years of power in living memory. Too late for those who have been killed and injured on this road; or the thousands (if not millions) of hours lost to the economy by vehicles in queues.

There's nothing wrong with the road, the majority of us have quite happily driven up and down it for 20, 30, 40 years or more without incident. Yes its a lot busier but believe it or not, it it is still possible to travel the entire length and breadth of the country without crashing as most of us seem to be able to manage. Unfortunately we have to allow for an unskilled and distracted element of motorists who really aren't switched on to theirs and their vehicles capabilities, you can spend all day on any trunk road scratching your head at peoples decision making and forward planning and wondering how they got the thing off the drive in the first place.
You've only got to look at how many cars drive up the verge at the westbound entrance to the southwick tunnel which by design is more than wide enough to drive 2 lorries through side by side and wonder how they managed to miss the entrance. We have to conclude that essentially there are a lot of idiots out there and maybe start to factor extra journey time in to allow for that.
We'll never make road design idiot proof but I think its time that driving tests made more of an effort because people are getting held up,hurt and killed because other people can't steer their vehicles properly.

Have some respect, people have probably been seriously injured or died, you do not know why or how this has happened you have just decided to jump upon your ignorant soap box. Think about the poor child maybe sitting in doors waiting for a parent who may not return tonight but decide to look on the local Argus website for answers and come up against morons spouting rubbish....

Says there a car crashed all by itself, all his own work. You show respect if you like but my thoughts are different. Sick of it, every bloody day someone or other manages to stuff it up for the rest of us on that road, too busy in their own little worlds rather than looking where they're going in the real, fast moving one in front of (and behind)their cars.

I saw an absolute peach a few weeks ago, 2 motors eastbound at the kingston roundabout both went for the same exit lane and stuffed each other into the central reservation. And then sat there stupidly gawping at each other because neither of them could open their doors. Respect? I don't think so mush, one day one of these fairground dodgem drivers is going to run me off my motorbike and push me into a tree after he's driven over my head because he's too busy picking his nose and examining the contents.
These people are dangerous idiots.

You'd have a fit if you saw the standard of driving on the M25. How some of these motorists still have a licence is beyond me. Think central Rome x 10 and you've got the level of driving. The only reason there's not that many serious accidents is that nobody's moving quick enough to have a bad crash..
Whatever's happened with this particular incident, I hope those involved are ok.

To all the people who were caught up in the accident at Firle and the thousands who were forced to take diversions, queuing around Lewes, Newhaven and Peacehaven, please write or Email your MP and demand a Motorway from East to West, along the South Coast.

The roads in Sussex are at saturation point, we need a Motorway to feed the economic growth in the South East.

I use the M25 every week and most of the time the traffic flows very well, however, every single time I see at least 3 utter knobheads using their mobiles, usually at high speed. It's actually easy to spot them as they wander, crossing lanes without any consideration for others.
Sad but true, there are A LOT of very poor, in-attentive drivers.
I do feel sorry for the people left behind by these tragedies but if a fatality results from their own poor driving then - so what!

Or people could drive a bit safer and slower????

I use that stretch of road a lot and I think a lot of accidents are caused by people driving too slowly. This causes tailbacks and the ones that are in a hurry make dangerous overtaking manoeuvres. Q from the James Bond films died on this stretch of road by the way.

totally agree with both psts, the standard of driving is more akin to a third world country in many cases. all road users have a responsibility for their own actions, and many cannot see further than the end of their bonnets!

With you 100 percent. I hope he or she is prosecuted for driving without due care and attention and that Sussex Police do their jobs for once.

If they do manage to prosecute expect it to take 6-12 month to get a court date only for it to be cancelled in favour of another trial and then get a second court date another 9-12 months down the line, so basically don't expect prosecution for at lease 18 - 24 months after the incident occurred!

Since when did this comment infer any lack of respect?!! This is a public forum about a public (road) space we all share and the poster hardly put his point across in an offensive way. In fact he is highlighting the truth and frustrations we all know and share. His point about the southwick tunnel is spot on when the majority of us can travel through it safely time afetr time without endangering or killing others!! Comments like yours sweep the problem under the rug which is not a solution. The fact is that the majority of these so called accidents are caused by poor standards of driving, too fast, too close, in a hurry, using or distrated by gadgets, not factoring in the weather etc etc etc. Its got to stop but hey lets not post the truth because by some twisetd stercthc of the imagination it might be disrespectful!!!
