An exhibition exploring Brighton’s rich history of political protest is being put on by Argus photographers.

Whose Streets? which is to be held as part of this year’s Brighton Photo Biennial, will run throughout October until November 4.

Not only will visitors have the chance to view the compelling images but they will also be able to buy copies.

Argus photojournalists have selected pictures from the past 40 years which best show the city’s culture of political protest.

The pictures show scenes from everything from CND marches, student sit-ins, anti-fascist demonstrations, protests against tax avoidance and resistance to cuts to education funding.

Argus chief photographer, Simon Dack, said: “It makes sense to put them back on the streets rather than on gallery walls.

“There will be light boxes in Jubilee Square with the pictures and posters showing arguments about local issues – from Smash EDO protests to the building of The Amex stadium at Falmer – on display in various locations.”

Argus chief photographer Simon Dack worked on the collection with curators of the Biennial programme Dr Ben Burbridge and Celia Davies. Visit www.theargus.co.uk/ whosestreets.

Excellent idea from The Argus - great advert for the traditions of protest that are alive and well in our City. Long may it continue - it's known as democracy!!!

I would like to see an exhibition of the urban decay of B&H under the Greens.
Dog shi* everywhere, the dreadful recycling and refuse service, the graffiti and the filthy student properties with duvets hanging in windows and run down gardens.
I think it would put off any more Londoners from moving here. We could help by sending photos in.

You should have seen the line of buses last Saturday ( 20+ ) following the animal rights protest along Western Rd. Great for the environment eh?
