Thousands of people enjoy the annual Burning the Clocks event in Brighton
A charity has less than 50 days to raise the £4,000 needed to host its traditional seafront extravaganza.
Brighton-based Same Sky is hoping to rely on the generosity of its spectators to pay for this year’s events in an innovative new community funding scheme.
The charity is asking for donations to pay for the traditional finale to the Burning the Clocks event that lights up the Brighton seafront every December.
With less than seven weeks to go before this year’s event on December 21, the charity had only registered £42.50 of donations.
To host the traditional fire show the charity needs to raise £2,000. An extra £1,000 will pay for a firework display while £4,000 will allow the charity to put on the show it wants.
The crowd funding exercise is just one of the ways the charity is attempting to pay for the event marking the shortest day of the year.
For £1,000 one lucky person can buy the right to light the bonfire at the end of the procession while a £500 donation will allow the donor to lead the parade.
Same Sky has also teamed up with Boho Gelato in Pool Valley, Brighton, to create a special ice cream with 20% of sales going towards supporting the event.
The charity has been forced to find new ways to fund Burning the Clocks as traditional revenues have dried up.
It received devastating news in March 2011 when the Arts Council announced it would stop its funding. The charity received nearly £100,000 from it in 2011/12 but nothing in the current financial year.
It still receives funding from Brighton and Hove City Council but has been forced to make cutbacks which means that this year’s Burning the Clocks will not include its traditional workshops for creating outfits and decorations for the parade.

Spend the money on Charity not on burning clocks. This new age drivel has to stop.
However, just to correct you, surely celebrating the Winter Solstice is an Old age tradion not new age/

The only place to view is from the road at the top. Couldnt see a single thing last year and won't be wasting my time this year. Thank you Brighton Council for ruining a great event for thousands of people!
