Nearly 2,700 households will have their rubbish collected from communal bins if new plans get the go-ahead.

Brighton and Hove City Council has proposed putting 135 communal wheelie bins in 49 locations in the Hanover and “The Triangle” areas of Brighton.

If given the green light, 56 parking spaces and eight loading bays would be lost from the area.

The local authority says the move will help stop gulls and foxes scattering rubbish across the street.

The areas affected are Hanover and ‘the Triangle’ – a collection of streets bounded by The Level, Lewes Road and Upper Lewes Road.

Special smaller bins would be used in Hanover, where narrow streets limit space.

The news follows trials earlier this year in Coleman Street and Washington Street in Hanover and in Park Crescent near The Level.

The council said these trials received positive responses.

A decision to launch the consultation will be taken at an Environment and Sustainability Meeting on October 17.

If councillors agree, consultation would take place in November and a final decision on whether to proceed would be taken in the New Year.

The council report reads: “The area has been surveyed to identify proposed bin locations and agreed with highways officers.

“Each location has been audited to ensure bins do not form an obstruction to pedestrians or road users, are safe to use and service and minimise nuisance for residents.

“Loss of parking space has been minimised.”

A council spokesman said that currently most households put black bin bags out onto the streets.

He said: “At the moment most of these streets use black bin bags to put their refuse out.

“Even when they are put out on the right day this can result in gulls and foxes strewing rubbish all over the place.

“Most litter comes from this source.

“Residents in Hanover are saying streets where communal bins were trialled have been transformed. So we’re considering asking residents across a wider area if they would like them.”
