Parcel thefts from Brighton doorsteps

Thieves are stealing parcels left outside homes, say police.

Sussex Police have received reports of parcels going missing in the Springfield Road and Ditchling Road areas of Brighton.

It is believed opportunist thieves are looking out for delivery workers and watching to see if they leave parcels outside.

Officers are carrying out high-visibility patrols in the area.

Inspector Bill Whitehead said: “As we moved towards Christmas we are likely to have more parcels being delivered.

“If you are expecting a parcel and you are going to be out, give instructions for it to be left with a trustworthy neighbour.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101.

They shouldn't leave parcels in open places unless specifically instructed to.

Maybe this is because Yodel have a habit of leaving parcels in doorways, hedges, bins... I know from experience

Not to mention leaving large items in full view of the street that aren't even for that address. A modicum of basic numeracy might be an advantage.

Say "red" backwards now...

I get the majority of my parcels delivered to work for this exact reason. I've had some expensive glasses left on the windowsill by the front door...Mr Postman completely ignored the fact that it was recorded delivery and didn't wait around for a signature. My friend's had things left in her wheelie bin with no note pushed through the letterbox to let her know...luckily there wasn't any rubbish collections that day!

Apparently, from the 1st Oct Royal Mail bought in the 'Delivery to Neighbour' scheme. If you aren't in they will leave parcels with one of your neighbours. I presume that if none of your neighbours are in they are then supposed to return it to the depot.

I will be opting out of the above as you can't specify which neighbour you want it left with.

Postmen who leave parcels on doorsteps should be sacked.

Yes, scandelous that parcels are left in full view or in bins etc. I have found Royal Mail to be better but far from perfect. It really puts me off online shopping. We lost a parcel left on the doorstep a few years ago.

I know one old lady that had a birthday present left in a wheely bin by a parcel delivery company. Needless to say it ended up in the dump!

I can't see any improvement as services race to the bottom to offer the cheapest service.

OMG this is so old news and has been happening all over the country for years! You’re not telling me it’s only just started to happen in Brighton…………

Dear Brighton Living, surely you don't expect the Argus 'reporters' (!) to report anything recent, do you? I understand that next week they will be scooping on the death of Pricess Diana.

Well Royal mail might but others dont bother. I live in a block of flats so it's effectively left indoors. No wonder they are taken its blatantly obvious no one is in when they are left outside. Tea leafs everywhere.

I think I know who is stealing them, I saw a man in a red top and grey shorts walking in and out of properties on ditchling road and he was clearly carrying parcels and letters.

We judge Royal Mail o’ we are so, So sorry but I can ashore you I have had Royal Mail levee parsleys outside my door many times I may live in flats but that dose not stop thieves coming in on the Postman’s Trade entrants button but most parsleys left outside are mostly carrier’s you have to report it to the firm you ordered it from and ask them to tell there carrier serves not to levee it but you say WE judge but didn’t Royal Mail not so long ago they would levee it with someone at ells address if your not in so what’s to stop them levying it on your doorstep ha.

Royal Mail doesnt leave parcels and anyone caught doing that will be dealt with. The good generation of postmen will know there customers and try to be as flexible as they can. Amazon quoted 700,000 parcels undelivered for Xmas by Yodel last year and had the most complaints about doorstepped parcels by there 'other' couriers....get off Royal Mails back !!!
