Increased recycling in Sussex diverts more rubbish from landfill

Recycling centres saved 13,500 tonnes more waste from going to landfill this year compared to 2011.

Veolia Environmental Services has revealed its recycling centres in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove had seen a significant increase in recycling and reuse rates in 2012.

The firm, which has 14 sites in Brighton and Hove and East Sussex, said the proportion of waste diverted away from landfill had increased from 71.2% to 92.4%.

The amount of green waste residents brought to the sites for composting increased by 6.7%, or the equivalent of 48 double-decker buses, on the previous year.

Between January and August this year, 11,300 tonnes of green waste, 2,500 tonnes of metals and 1,000 tonnes of glass were transformed into new products such as bottles, food and drinks cans and compost.

In total 52,000 tonnes of resources have been diverted from local landfill, which the firm said is fast running out and due to be full by the end of next year.

Brighton and Hove’s centre off Wilson Avenue had the highest proportion of material not going to landfill with 97% while Hastings had the highest proportion of waste going to landfill with just 84% of material recycled or reused.

Don't worry, I seem to recall they intend to bring in French waste should there be a shortfall.

Recycling levels in B&H are the lowest in the UK despite having a green council. Now that's a re election fail for a start.
A basic green activity failed.
Two recycling centres both close at 4pm each day and one closes at midday on Saturday leaving Wilson avenue open, hence the increase in recycling at that site.
The traffic queue to get in is about a 45 minute wait as every half hour a rubbish truck arrives to unload and the gate is closed to the public who wait with their car engines spewing out fumes.
It's an absolute nonsense. And probably more pollution generated with people from hove driving across town.
But this council refuses to tackle recycling instead opts for unused, unwanted cycle routes just because they got money from the EU.
Crackpots.
