When the wind blew

A trunk call for these telephone boxes in New Road, Brighotn
Twenty-five years ago to the day, the people of Sussex went to bed as normal. But what happened that night was anything but normal.
Gusts of up to 120mph felled century old trees, raging waves tossed boats around like toys and buildings which were thought untouchable crumbled at the immense power of Mother Nature.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987, The Argus is producing an eight-page supplement which comes out tomorrow.
As well as an array of horrifying images of the storm’s aftermath, Argus chief photographer, Simon Dack, tells the story of his October 16.
The special pull-out also features a range of your memories, including those of a then 11-year-old Claire Giles who describes hiding in a wardrobe and Michael Coles who explains how he had to chainsaw his way out of Worthing.
Don’t miss tomorrow’s paper.
