Pervert alert after pony dies in Polegate field
A horse sanctuary fears a young pony was killed by a pervert after she was found dead in her field with injuries to her eye, jaw and hindquarters.
Sussex Police yesterday called for anyone with information on the death of 17-month-old pony Bunny to contact them, but said there was no evidence that the animal was deliberately harmed.
Pat Evans and Zoe McQuade of the Little Bramley Farm Horse Sanctuary said they feared Bunny had been deliberately attacked by a pervert and that another of their horses had also been abused last month.
They said: “We turned up to find Bunny dead. Bunny had been beaten around the head and foul play done to her. We now know what happened to Charlie was the same. Everyone please keep a close eye on your horses.”
Sussex Police were called to the sanctuary, near Polegate, after Bunny was found on Saturday morning, but said Bunny’s injuries could have been caused by other horses in the field.
Inspector Anthony Wakefield from Wealden neighbourhood police team said: “This was obviously a distressing find for the pony’s owner.
“The pony has been examined by a local vet, but without a post mortem it is impossible to determine how the injuries were sustained or what caused its death. The field did contain other horses, but they did not suffer any injuries.
“Animals grazing in fields are vulnerable to many things and there is no evidence to suggest this pony’s injuries were deliberately inflicted.
“However, if you are an owner of horses and livestock, I would advise that you make regular checks on your animals and if you see or hear anything suspicious then please call 999 immediately.”
Sussex Police said there was no reason to believe Bunny’s death was linked to the previous attacks in which the horses were stabbed.
Police urged anyone with information to call 101 quoting serial 707 of 13/10.
