Shoreham Footbridge to remain closed

The old Shoreham footbridge will remain closed to the general public for good because it has been deemed unsafe.

The northern end of the bridge was removed last week as part of six weeks of work to move BT cabling from the old bridge to a new £9.8m bridge being constructed nearby.

It was due to reopen next week, having been joined to the northern edge of the new bridge. But now West Sussex County Council engineers have assessed the condition of the existing bridge and deemed it not safe for public use.

Pieter Montyn, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The county council appreciates the inconvenience this will cause. However, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned to keep the footbridge open, it is in a worse condition than was expected.

"In the interest of public safety the footbridge will now remain closed until it can be fully demolished.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said the footbridge was hit by a barge during high tide on September 16, with the damage described as ‘minimal.’

They continued: “When the engineers removed some of the bridge and assessed it during the closure, they described it as a bit dubious and said and they can’t guarantee people’s safety as it’s 100 years old. This coupled with the barge incident; it’s too much of a risk to open it.”

The County Council’s contractor, Osborne, will have access to the bridge during construction. The replacement bridge is still due to open in summer 2013, with the marine piling having been completed and seven piers already put in place.

During the closure, a free bus service has been laid on to travel between Riverside Road, Shoreham Beach, and Shoreham High Street.

Mr Montyn added: “The shuttle bus service will be maintained throughout the closure period and the county council has sought an improved service for those with mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs who are unable to access the shuttle bus service.”

Funding for the new bridge has come from sustainable transport charity Sustrans and West Sussex County Council. The charity received a £50 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund to extend the National Cycle Network into towns and cities across the UK.

BT Openreach has also completed the permanent cabling work under the River Adur and removed the temporary cables from the footbridge.

Sustrans Area Manager Nick Farthing said: “It’s disappointing that the current link has to close before the replacement bridge is open for use, but we know that Shoreham residents are looking to their fantastic new crossing, which will make it so much easier and safer to make local journeys on foot or by bike.”

So, how much will the contractors, who doubled the bill after their agreed quote & still got the go-ahead, be fined for this outrage?

Does this mean the existing footbridge was damaged during construction of the new one or that pedestrians may have been using it for years whilst it was unsafe?
This must be very bad news for any resident of the island that commutes via train etc.

and yes I do realise it's not actually an island.....

How did the footbridge suddenly become unsafe?
Who made the decison to close it ?
Was expert EXTERNAL advice sought?
Or is it simply a case that the fact that thousands are going to be inconvenienced and the economy of Shoreham town centre and Shoreham Beach significantly damaged is of no concern to the WSCC

Its really no problem, the excellent bus service is so reliable and goes on for over 18 hours a day.

Congratulations to all at Compass bus for such a reliable, friendly and on time service

It's more an island than the Isle of Oxney is.

So what has been done for those mentioned? An improved service - like what exactly?

If the footbridge was hit by a barge then surely the council needs to make an insurance claim.I used to cross the bridge on a daily basis to go to the pub on shoreham beach side its too much hazzle getting the shuttle bus so surely with the bridge now closed to new one next summer i think the council needs to compensate the local buisnesses that are going to lose out massively.Plus the shuttle bus does not cater for the disabled.I think the council have not thought this through and just came up with the simplest answer CLOSE THE BRIDGE.

The shuttle service is ok but does not cater for the disabled and it will effect local shops etc as people will not go into shoreham so often.I think the struggling pubs will be worst hit.

So, the old bridge was held up by some telephone cables then. Seems it should remain closed and demolished with all due speed, before it falls on an unsuspecting Boatist! Summer 2013 won't be long.

The old bridge was 'tied/anchored' to the the north side which was the 1st part removed. This has now left an unanchored end which is now 'wobbly' which was completely foreseeable & once again bridge engineers go from one shambles to another...lets see how much it overruns...

But all of this is irrelevant - the people of shoreham will be thrilled when their new bridge opens next summer, ooops prob autumn due to unforeseen delays and difficulties arising out of the demolition of the old bridge and underwater hazards, and flooding of houseboats. in the meantime enjoy the shoreham traffic jam.

At least no more rapes and assaults on it.

This is inconvenient to say the least and as some of you have commented how has it now been too unsafe? I think I smell a rat!

The traffic jams to get off the Island are hideous, the town just cannot cope with it, I dread to think what will happen with the new Morrison’s opens.

Does anyone know what the plans for the bus will be over the Christmas break? My plans of a nice Christmas lunch in town maybe a little scuppered by this if there is no bus.

But I do think we cannot place all blame on the contractor, the Council have been moving the bar time and time again and expecting the same cost and same deadlines, and this is just not possible.
