No joke I'm afraid. I live opposite the farm where the barn is. When it started we thought that a firework or ammo store had gone off. The explosion sounds lasted a few minutes. Since then we have been inundated with smoke; even now after 19 hours it is still burning and shedding black dust onto our cars. Smells terrible. Cause apparently spontaneous combustion!

2:02pm

Fire crews have now left the scene with the farmer.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that the cause of the fire had not yet been established.

She added: "About 80% of the hay has been destroyed.

"The incident has now been left with the farmer to continue to burn out over the next 24 hours.

"There is npo confirmed cause of the fire yet, that means we are keeping an open mind as to whether it was arson.

" It will be looked into by our fire investigators."
