A new bank which promises to shake up the high street is to open in Brighton.

Metro Bank is recruiting for 30 jobs for its new site in North Street, Brighton, after it was handed planning permission by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The unconventional money lender is hiring cashiers, customer service representatives and assistant store managers for its new branch.

The bank has raised eyebrows in the financial world for its casino-style layout, dog-friendly ethos and slogan: “No stupid bank rules.”

The new Brighton branch will take up two discount shops and an office in 80-82 North Street.

In July, the council’s planning committee rejected an application from the bank to open the outlet near Churchill Square shopping centre. In October it launched a fresh attempt to open a branch in a city centre.

Green light

And the bank was given the green light to open at the end of last month by officers rather than the planning committee.

Council leader Jason Kitcat, whose Regency constituency includes the Churchill Square area, has written in support of the bank’s plans. He told the Argus that the fact Metro Bank wanted to open in Brighton was a “feather in a cap for the city”.

Craig Donaldson, chief executive of Metro Bank, said it has offered to pay for the refurbishment of nearby offices so Brighton Housing Trust, which occupies the second floor of the building, can move its support services.

Metro Bank added it is committed to lending to businesses in the area.

Nick Simon, store manager at the new branch, said: “I am delighted to be part of the future of banking in Metro Bank and excited to launch the very first store in Brighton.”
