A music app created by prodigious interns has become the buzz of the tech world.

Social music concept Chüne allows multiple users to collaborate on playlists and hear them on a speaker device.

It was the work of a trio of talented interns at Brighton digital firm Clearleft.

The celebrated firm has just been nominated agency of the year at the Net Awards 2014, its fourth nomination and its third win should it scoop the award.

Chüne is the first app of its kind which allows crowd-sourced rather than individually curated playlists, encouraging social interaction.

The device can change tune based different tastes with users able to ‘tap in’ with their iPhone and update the music – rather than fighting for control.

The prototype’s design and concept has won praise from the leading lights of the tech world.

Staff with experience on major projects with Unicef and Channel 4 were inspired by the graduates.

Clearleft founder Andy Budd said: “At the time we were working on a big ideation project, which we were trying to crack using the power of our intellect alone.

“However, watching our interns tackle a similar project in a completely different way really inspired us and will no doubt influence the way we tackle similar problems in the future.”

Creators Victor Johansson, Kilian Bochnig and Zassa Kavuma were plucked from graduate degree shows for the Clearleft Graduate Internship Programme 2013.

With existing skills in product design, digital design and robotics they were given a special workshop and mentoring from Clearleft’s experienced roster of designers.

The brief was to create a product that turned an active digital behaviour into a passive one.

Around 70 ideas were whittled down to 14, five and then the final product.

The concept is not due to be commercially produced at the moment – but could be developed in the future.

Andy added: “We want to see ideas propagating and flourishing.

“If we’re unable to make something commercially ourselves then it would certainly be interesting if someone else can pick it up.

“The work we do is often inspired by the work of others – there’s very little that’s new in the world, it’s usually just new combinations.”

The firm has recently opened an auditorium with an HD projector in Middle Street with a packed calendar of public events.
