A printing company is backing a campaign to plant 12 million trees.

Gemini Press in Dolphin Way, Shoreham, is donating five per cent of the price of its first order from every new client this year to the Woodland Trust's Tree for All project.

Director Nigel Holmes said the industry had a "negative image" in terms of its environmental impact because of the materials used in the printing process.

But he said his company was doing its best to change that image.

He said: "We already have in place a number of procedures to help reduce the impact on the environment, such as paper from sustainable sources and vegetable-based inks.

"We also sent saplings to clients instead of Christmas cards and, where possible, encouraged supplying proofs via email and not through the post, which helps reduce the amount of paper used and cuts down on the use of postal services and the fuel they burn.

"We have linked up with the Woodland Trust because it is such a worthy cause and enables us to replace trees that are used in the printing process and protect and enhance the countryside environment, which is one of Britain's most precious resources."

The Woodland Trust aims to prevent further loss of ancient woodland, restore and improve woodland biodiversity and increase the area of native woodland. Janice Hix, corporate fundraising manager at the trust, said: "We are delighted to receive support and funding from Gemini Press to help us create much-needed woodland here in Britain.

"It is also heartening to see the company is committed to reducing its environmental impact, such as opting for paper from sustainable and recycled sources."

Gemini Press is a long-term corporate supporter of Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT), printing the group's membership magazine, newsletters and reserve guides.

SWT chief executive Dr Tony Whitbread said: "With Sussex containing one of the highest concentrations of ancient woodland in Britain, it's fantastic news that Gemini is supporting an initiative to breathe new life into our native woodland."
