A CAFE has joined the war on plastic.
The 1066 Café in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, Hastings, undertook a rebrand in October last year.
It has made significant changes in moving forward to become more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Drinking straws, which are now not given unless asked for, have been replaced by biodegradable straws, and their usage has dropped by 66 per cent a week.
Compostable take-away cups which break down in just 12 weeks are now provided instead of plastic, which can take up to 500 years to decompose.
Sugar pourers have replaced sachets and cold drinks in recyclable glass bottles and wooden stirrers have also been introduced.
The initiative coincides with recent national news that the UK is looking at plans to ban plastic straws as early as next year.
Leanna Lawson, marketing executive for Priory Meadow, said: “We are very proud of 1066 and their achievements in bringing waste down.
“They are now recycling 80 per cent of their waste at their head office and bakery and have solar panels providing energy.
“They really are leading the way in sustainability and you can see the passion within the team to make the changes.”
The café is rewarding customers with ten per cent off all future hot drinks when they purchase and reuse one of their bamboo fibre travel mugs.
