THE Co-op has opened a new store in Portslade after building on surplus land in the grounds of the Mile Oak Inn.

The shop represents a £585,000 investment by the Co-op, with pub company Punch, owners of the pub and surrounding land, investing a significant amount to transform the pub.

The store in Mile Oak Road has created 16 jobs and has a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials.

It will also bring a funding boost to local community groups through its Membership scheme.

Members receive a five per cent reward on the purchase of own-branded products and services with a further one per cent benefitting local good causes.

In addition to its good causes, the store will also be collecting money for Mile Oak Recreation Action Group.

Lee Hayes, store manager for the new Co-op in Portslade, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the community into their new store.

“We are thrilled to have made such a significant investment in Portslade – it is an exciting time for the whole team to be involved in the launch of the Co-op’s newest store.

“The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and our ambition is to establish the store as a local hub, a real asset for the community.”

Area manager Mark Shadwell added: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to be part of the local community.

“We are also giving back to the community.”
