Describe your job
I am venue director at the Rendezvous Casino, Brighton Marina – making it a vibrant, convivial and exciting venue to visit.
How would your colleagues describe you?
Demanding but true to my word and respectful of everyone.
Your idea of a good time – highbrow or lowbrow?
Both – I’d enjoy watching boxing or a night at the opera.
Do you live to work or work to live?
No real differentiation – I get so much enjoyment out of working time but I don’t think about it if I’m off work.
Best advice you’ve been given?
Make sure you deliver the bottom line.
What is your favourite movie?
Casino.
Married/single/other?
Married.
Worst advice you’ve been given?
Follow the tried and trusted way – it’s a good recipe for decline.
What is the worst job you’ve ever had?
Managing a business over-burdened by debt. Everything was about cost and there was no creativity at all.
Who’s your business guru?
Gary Hughes, who is a non-exec director of Sainsbury and a good friend, and James Mortimer, whose clubs and restaurants in Glasgow have amazingly high standards. I also really admire Steve Wynn, the founder of numerous great Vegas casinos, for his creativity.
Business lunches – ‘just water for me, thanks’ or ‘can I see the wine list?
Nothing wrong with a nice glass of wine!
Dragons’ Den or The Apprentice?
Apprentice no question. It’s hilarious.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Gambling of course.
What was the last book you read?
A History of Modern Britain by Andrew Marr What was the last album you bought?
21 by Adele but I don’t think I can listen to another of her songs for the next 10 years she’s so overplayed.
Most detestable piece of business speak?
“I’ll monitor it” – generally means I’ll be completely indolent.
What’s your business motto?
Keep looking for a better way.
