Gloves fit for a princess to wear

Princess Anne took home a pair of gloves she made for herself during a visit to a famous Sussex manufacturer.

The Queen wore gloves made by Cornelia James, based in Cliffe Industrial Estate, Lewes, when she married Prince Philip in 1947. The firm has continued to supply Buckingham Palace since winning a Royal Warrant in 1979 and Princess Anne was delighted to tour the factory during her recent visit to Sussex.

Managing director Andrew Lawson, whose mother-in-law was the original Cornelia James, said the princess spoke to his five staff before trying her hand at cutting her own pair of leather gloves.

He said: “They turned out very well so she took them home with her. It was a real pleasure for us to have her here and she was extremely nice and jolly.”

As well as royalty, Cornelia James supplies celebrities such as Madonna and Lindsay Lohan.

Mr Lawson said: “We are a good English mix of traditional skills and cutting-edge fashion.”
