Girl geeks going from strength to strength

3:46pm Wednesday 27th February 2008

A networking event for women to share their passion for technology has become so popular it is extending to coffee mornings.

Brighton and Hove-based Girl Geeks was started a year ago to bring together women who work in IT and other technological industries.

It began with lunches and dinners where women could discuss the workplace and debate the latest crazes and gadgets.

One year on and it has attracted such a following that girl geeks from all over the area are joining up and organisers are holding coffee mornings.

Computer programmer Emily Toop, 29, heard about the group when a male friend sent her a link to the website for a joke.

She went to a dinner and immediately felt at home. She said: "I knew a lot of geeky guys, and I knew a lot of women but the women I knew had no idea about my job.

"When I first came to Girl Geeks I felt so happy to finally be among like-minded people."

A year later she has a new job and a new boyfriend, both results of contacts she made at Girl Geeks events.
