Hate list proves tragedy for some

The trouble with being a reporter is a tendency to see both sides of the argument. This will simply not do for a columnist.

So every now and then I compile a list of things that irritate me. Here’s the hate list for 2012.

Coca Cola. The triumph of marketing over taste.

People in Seaford who don’t want the coastal cycle route passing their homes although bikes would cause them no problems.

Campaigners who insist that libraries should be kept as they were. In this electronic age, they must modernise or die.

Mean-minded folk on Shoreham Beach who have opposed a board walk. As a result it is unfinished and disabled people cannot complete the circuit.

Many buskers on the streets of Brighton deluded into thinking they have musical talent.

Pelican crossings in Sussex which don’t respond immediately to your push, operating only when you have in frustration crossed the road against the lights.

The use of the word fictional. I prefer fictitious.

Adulation of Morecambe and Wise. They simply were not funny and are no match for many modern comedians.

Any song by the Bee Gees. If goats could sing, they would be better than the Bee Gees.

Easyjet’s policy of charging heavily for bags in the holds of aircraft. It means their cheap fares aren’t really cheap.

Absolutely anything to do with Ryanair.

Gross overcharging by Isle of Wight ferry operators, making this short crossing the most expensive per mile in the world.

People who say we should chill out. I think relaxation is 80% death.

Cyclists who ride without lights. They are dangerous to themselves and other road users.

Parents who triple park outside schools so that their little darlings do not have to walk to and from the gates.

Climate change fanatics who tell us the world will end within five minutes unless we all stay at home freezing. They are wrong.

Climate change deniers who insist the world is not warming up when there is incontrovertible evidence that it is.

Utilities who undertake road works without telling us what they are for and how long they will last.

People in Brighton who wrongly believe Kemp Town starts immediately east of Old Steine.

Over protection of children so that they are not allowed out on their own, missing out on enormous fun at little risk.

Old people who moan incessantly about their ailments. We all know the only interesting ones are our own.

The X Factor. Banal, dated and contemptibly cruel to untalented contestants.

Real time signs for Stagecoach buses that don’t work most of the time at several stops in Hove. They are not worth having.

Campaigners for changing the clocks by putting them forward an hour, ensuring dark mornings for half the year. It has already been tried between 1968 and 1971 when it was a miserable failure.

People who say we should soak the rich. If the Government does that, most of them will leave, taking their money with them. Far better to keep them here but ensure they pay tax.

Private roads near the beach in West Sussex, preventing the rest of us enjoying views of the sea.

Fierce dogs which worry and even kill livestock. You can’t blame farmers for pointing a gun at them.

An elected House of Lords. This will just be a second class Commons when the alternative would be to appoint genuine experts in many subjects who aren’t party politicians.

Anti-American feeling. The USA is a great country and loyal ally. It should not be equated with the people leading it.

Opposition to the Portobello sewage works improvements.

The rejection of this scheme has led to the current construction of a plant at Peacehaven, costing huge sums of money and scarring the landscape.

Dangerous crossings of main roads such as the South Downs Way over the A24 south of Washington and the Downs Link over the Steyning bypass.

The new national park authority should take immediate action.

Ghost stories. They are untrue and deeply dull.

Regional TV announcers who at 10.35pm wish us a happy evening. It’s already over for those reduced to watching them.
